The following is one of my notes where i wiffle about ideas on gaming. Specifically one of the ones addressing alternate options on how to address the xp disparity in the IOD gaming environment by looking at the culture and expectation rather than the mechanics. It has a bit of into then the original note.

A random idea about IOD culture in relation to xp levels and dealing with them )

I do pretty much do that now - either tell people "this isn't really for you, it's for the newer characters" or adjust depending on who turns up. I have to do this because of the XP disparaity ( ... )

I think I agree with all of this. I shall try and write something more coherent of my own in a minute.

I do approve of this.

As a player I do try not to butt into things that might be for lower level XP characters or even just not to rush in at other games than my home one so I am not plot hogging or stealing from others.

Something like this being used would make me happy.

I totally agree. Not entirely sure of the bandings and how it should all work, but the general principle is just right ( ... )

Yeah, good stuff Ben.

There seems to be this belief that you need to play a high powered character to have fun. I think if you want street level plot, you should play a street level character. Don't feel bad about taking time off from your primary character.

As I mentioned to Dave M on his LJ, it's not an arms race. I think due to the confrontational nature of WW RPG's, quite often people want to max out their primary character for security reasons (so they're as tough as they can be so they won't die). But your character living should not be your primary goal in roleplaying, your primary goal should be having fun, and that can sometimes mean taking a huge risk with your character.

Anyway, rambling a bit. Sounds like a lot of people thinking about change over there, and I think it's needed.

Great post. I agree.

At some point there is a trade off between realism and enjoyment. The quote from Rhona above with "but my character would come along". Fine, in a perfectly realistic world your character would. But step back for a moment and understand it's not all about you. For the lower level players to enjoy the game, you need to let them go and deal with it.

At some point, you need to make some OOC decisions to make the IC more enjoyable. Complete realism is not the goal - enjoyment for all is the goal. Sometimes realism and enjoyment go hand in hand, but sometimes they must diverge, and when they do we should chose enjoyment.
