Free-weights, definitely. Machines are for wusses. I typically lift a few hundred pounds around fifty times per afternoon, and I just feel infinitely more accomplishment knowing that it's me doing all the work instead of some stupid machine.
sorry, have to disagree with the judge... i totally vote machines. it's a good way to be consistent and you have a better chance of doing it properly and not hurting yourself. plus, it's designed to get the most muscle-build out of a single repetition.
If you have as much muscle as I do, you never have to worry about getting hurt. And why would I want my work-out to be efficient? Real men just do double the number of exercises to make up for it.
Agreed. Free weights, I believe, are good for basic arm exercises, but as Ellen said, machines are much safer and consistent. Most machines lend knowledge to unexperienced weight-lifters with instructions and primary muscles worked. Now that's exercise!
Yep, free-weights do build the most muscle, and give you body coordination. If you just sit on a machine, all you do is basically flex, but with normal weights you get balance and no little pads to get in teh way.
Free-weights are probably better, but machines look fun. I've never tried machines (other than a treadmill or stationary bike), so I wouldn't really know if the weight-lifting ones are any good. Regardless, I'm sticking with free-weights.
