Maybe it's just me, but the new keyboard parts for "Off With your Head" really don't seem to fit. The sound and style of the electric piano in that song seems to take away from the emotional impact and depth. Otherwise it was mainly a really great set. Magdalena had "Don't starve your SELF when you can eat a Superb Lyrebird today!" written down her front, which was an amusing reference to a certain other band on the bill.

Not only was this the fifth time i'd seen .hinge in the past three months, but out of those five times, it's the third time they've played at the Bull & Bush. Considering they're from Melboure, that's quite a feat. They travel to Sydney rather frequently and play here more often than many Sydney bands do! They love Sydney. Which is great, because it means i get to see them heaps! Tonight they opened with "We Might Just Kill You" from their forthcoming CD due later this year, then played the opening track from 2004's Something to Adore. Also from that absolutely amazing album, "Wave", "Cut the Chord" and "Stylus" were played. As well as "Boy", which finished the set. Between those was "The Ring of the Gypsy Bitch" and "Pleasure Dilemma" from their 2001 Gypsy EP and new song "The Man in the Desert" which is apparently inspired by certain things going on the world at the moment.

Superb Lyrebird is made up of Dave Bleus (also lead singer/guitarist for seminal band SELF IS A SEED), James (formerly the bass player for ENDUSK) on synthesizers and vocals, Nathan on drums (which he formerly did in Fat Slinky) and...on bass (aslo ex-Fat Slinky). Although in some ways not a great departure from SELF IS A SEED, in some ways it is. The most obvious differences being the use of synthesisers and samples and also that Dave has a customised megaphone attached to his microphone, which is used in various songs. But there are other differences, perhaps more subtle. Dave is a bit more experimental in his guitar playing (and he is the only one playing guitar in this band), the drumming style is different and the backing vocalists play a more prominent role singing. The lighting and the synths made it seem gave the feeling of UFOs landing or of us being inside one.
With a finely decorated kick-drum, free CDs and badges, Superb Lyrebird have made a very solid start (this was the first gig).
