i used to be one of those people who could never let an idiot have the last word. i'd have to point out the stupid or the illogic or the general wrongness of whatever said idiot was trying to say. because i couldn't let the idiot think that they'd won. which of course made me an idiot, because only an idiot seeks to get in the last word with an ( Read more... )

I got into a heated discussion about Sarah Palin last night with my... wait for it... grandmother.

I am just glad I had the sanity to stop after about 2 minutes because it was going downhill fast. Especially after she said if it wasn't for Palin, Russia would have taken Alaska lands back.

Grandma's right. Sarah Palin successfully defended the lands of Alaska from the invading Russian army during her less than one term as governor. Clearly Palin's a patriot and a genius.

So is it hypocritical for divorced people to be marriage counselors? For alcoholics to talk to others about the dangers of alcoholism?

frankly, the marriage counselor comparison seems like apples and oranges, because presumably marriage counselors are basing their work in, you know, a program of study in counseling, psychology, mediation, and talk therapy, and therapists are purposefully not supposed to use their own experience as a basis for handling their clients' issues. a better comparison would be, say, rush limbaugh lamenting that america is losing it's family values when he himself is on his fourth marriage and has been treated more than once for substance abuse. and yes, i consider that hypocritical and disingenuous.
