On writing...

I've taken a break from writing fan fiction for quite a while, but the muse has decided to return,  and I've sketched out a fic that I just may write.

Not that I've not been writing: I have. Loads. Of my own stuff. But that's actual work. I remember the much-lauded HP fan fic writer Lavenderbrown stating once that the people who say writing is work are just bitching because it isn't work at all.

So wrong.

Fan fiction is A LOT easier. At least for me. I don't have to worry about character development and plot... well... sometimes it's there and sometimes not. The characters, especially in HP, are beautifully crafted already, so plot isn't necessary.

But when I write my own stuff, I've taken to sketching out the goals, conflicts and stakes in those conflicts for each main character then fleshing out the characters themselves. Then plotting. Then writing. Revision. Revision. Revision. Then I may do about five or six more drafts. I'm slow and plodding. And, of course, I get stuck or bored or both and have to shelve the current project. You know, so it'll "ferment" in my brain. So, I shelve it and pull another one out, blow the dust from it and begin.

Is anyone else, who writes their own fiction, slow and plodding? Or is everyone else much faster? I'm afraid to know the answer.
