Hello!

So, I've been on LJ for a while, but I've never really posted, apart from our wedding posts. But then andrewducker asked everyone to introduce themselves and I friended a few more people, so I thought, maybe I should write more. Hence, here I am ( Read more... )

My experience of doing a PhD is that they should come with a mental health warning! I can why you're tempted by that but yeah, I wouldn't recommend one if you're going to struggle with energy and concentration, especially not if what you really want to be doing is having kids (although I know people who've had kids during PhDs and made it work, I will admit).

I had a nosey at your wedding posts as`I'm planning my own at the moment - you did really well with your dress, you look lovely :) I wanted to avoid bridal shops like the plague too and ended up buying a 1960s wedding dress in a vintage shop in Edinburgh.

I'm intrigued by the combination of English Lit and physics - how come you ended up doing both?

Yes, I think a PhD right now would be the wrong thing to do. Maybe one day ( ... )

The whole wedding industry juggernaut is totally baffling to me, I wanted to avoid it as much as possible. I was really lucky with my dress, I wasn't sure I'd find anything big enough in the waist that wasn't huge in the chest. Also it was ridiculously cheap given it's silk, but I guess 60s stuff isn't very popular.

Ahh, that makes sense. I did History with my sciences at A level and keep vaguely thinking I'd like to pick it up again for fun at some point. I need to srt out my career disaster first though, because being a crappy post doc isn't getting me anywhere!

Hello, lovely to meet you. Re family - go for if! IMHO do it sooner rather than later. I had my daughter at 28 and it's pleasurable now to have a functioning teenager who I can share interests with. I have friends who waited till their mid to late 30s and are just going though the learning to read, wanting to run around/ be active stage now and they are constantly claiming tiredness and no time to themselves - they are also jealous that I can go out and be sociably active whilst they are stuck at home with their young kids.

I'm hoping it's a case of waiting a few months, rather than years. We probably could survive on Rob's income alone (have been since we got married as I've not been working, will have to when hypothetical kids are small), it would just be useful to have a little more money right now and to be eligible for maternity pay.
