Challenge
Okay, I’ve never done this before but here goes (puts toe timidly in the cold water of web looking for big hairy spiders.)
A few weeks ago, I was doing (sorry participating) in an Easter egg hunt at a local museum. One of the glass cases caught my one good eye (the other two are a little bit watery and the one in the back of my head is useless). This item was a Victorian Mourning Doll. Didn’t have time to read the small piece of card attached to spooky looking doll as when you’re with an under three their more interest in running and jumping around breakable items.
The web wasn’t that helpful but by what my small brain could gather. The Victorian’s (who were a little fixated with death) made these ‘dolls’ to remember children who had died. Many dolls of the period would use the child's own hair and be fashioned to look like the child.
Also found this:-
Lynn Flewelling's deliciously creepy novel THE BONE DOLL'S TWIN deals with elements of this (the main character carries a doll inhabited by the spirit of her twin brother, killed at birth). Wonderful dark fantasy.
I know other cultures use these dolls too.
Okay so I’m throwing out a challenge, catch it if you can.
1) A spooky story
2) I would like the Cardiff streets not to be awash with rain (so maybe a spooky summer story)
3) Must contain a Mourning doll
4) Must contain Ianto
5) The rest is up to you.
Well that’s it, me dears.
Work your magic.
