Yes, you can watch "Serenity" without having seen "Firefly," although you might miss the significance of a few things. (I haven't seen the whole season myself, so I'm sure *I* missed the significance of a few things.) However, it's a great movie all on its own, and explains the backstory very well. The three other folks who saw it with Jeff and I had never seen "Firefly," and they really liked it. One of them absolutely gushed about it, and he's not the gushing type.
