Ron's letter had arrived that morning during breakfast, like it did every Tuesday since she started her 7th year at Hogwarts. And just like every Tuesday, Hermione read it eagerly as she walked around the school's grounds. But instead of a sappy love letter or one filled with antics that made her laugh, this one was short and miserable.
Ron needed her, and she felt wretched about being so far away. If she were in London, she could be there for him. She would let him deny that something was wrong until he gave in and told her. Once he did, she would hold him lovingly and with the determination to help ease his sorrow.
During the last Hogsmeade weekend, he had been cheerful, joking around and trying to steal kisses at every corner. His blue eyes were bright as he talked animatedly about their summer plans. Now, days later, it was like if a black cloud was hovering over him.
Suddenly it hit her, April 1st was only days away… the first one without Fred.
As she sat down on the edge of the lake, Hermione spotted scattered orange poppies that were starting to bloom and though about how ironic it was. Flowers blooming, green leaves, and clear skies were signs that spring was upon them, and yet in his heart there was only grief.
She had to let him know she was thinking of him. It was never easy, but she put all her love for him into the spell and conjured her Patronus. Her otter will let him know… know that no matter where she was, her heart was always with him.
