Tezuka practices one character a day. Which character is not for him to decide: his grandfather picks each one the night before, hands smoothing over calligraphy, touching the arcs of ink, the space of a heart boxed with wild strokes. He has his favourites, of course, but he keeps them soft and close in his mind without brush and papyrus to trap them, ink blurring to green felt and the dry matted scent of disturbed clay. He traces the day's character over and over into the palm of his right hand, small and secret, counting strokes, and folds his fingers over each iteration to keep it as safe as they are in his grandfather's keeping.
