I'm going to actually challenge this proverb (from where/whom does it come?). Although its message is nice on the surface, what it really implies is that personal recognition is the ultimate goal in life and in death. Would it not be better to be a good but anonymous man (or woman, thank you) who left a positive impact on the world? Should not the goal be to leave it better than you found it rather than focusing on being remembered in posterity?
I see what you're saying, but I view it in a different light. It is often possible to not make the world a worse place in anonymity (ex: driving properly). However, actively making the world a better place is something that people remember. Maybe not a lot of people, but some do.
