it's not really Wyoming, it's somewhere in Alberta Canada. I haven't seen the movie, but I read the short story and I didn't like that much. I think people just feel like they have to praise it because it deals with homosexuality and if they say something bad about it they'll be seen as homophobic. Maybe?
Let's all go to Alberta then! Uhmmm, I wondered if all the interest from people was because of the homosexuality component... To be honest I was just curious to see Ang Lee's new movie (I was so in love with The Ice Storm...).
Y'know what? Wyoming IS really beautiful, but the movie was actually filmed in Canada.
Haven't seen it yet, so I can't comment on the film itself. It's good to get another point of view on it, though. So many people seem to be giving the film way too much credit, as if it should be "touching" just because the characters happen to be gay. Like you said-- so what? What really matters is whether or not it is a good story.
But, I'll stop commenting since I haven't seen it yet. :)
for me, what was sad was that ennis couldn't handle actually fortifying the relationship, living together, whatever because he was afraid they'd get the shit beaten out of them- and then it happened anyway. if you don't think about it as a movie about a gay couple, and just as a love story involving someone who can't face his feelings for someone- i thought it was great. and a lot of people in the US aren't nearly as ok with homosexuality as we'd like to believe, so for them it really is a big whoop.
i also think blocking out all pre movie hype makes movies much better, because otherwise we are expecting something a certain way and it might not be so.
I agree with the fact that two people who love each other and are not free to stay together as much as they want is more than sad, it is unfair and goes against a person's right to be happy. (I always think that as long as our freedom of choice doesn't harm someone else, we have the right to do what makes us happy).
Thank you so much Linda for sharing your perspective. Honestly I had the feeling this was a love story I already had seen in other movies and in tragedy plays too. This was probably what disappointed me most: after all this talking, I expected the movie to be something totally different.
i thought in this story it wasn;t even necessarily society that kept them apart- it was ennis' inability to accept his feelings. that has probably been done before but i thought heath ledger did an excellent job of receding inside himself... anyways. the naked lady party is still on if you want to come, i'm going to email you some directions. :)
i think heath deserves it,plush_octopsFebruary 11 2006, 21:37:47 UTC
he and jake gyllenhal risked their careers making this film, both of them did mindblowing performances, and heath ledger definitely deserves his praise
( ... )
i'm glad to share :) i too like to see what other people have to say, especially on topics such as this.
i think i may have come off the wrong way about accents before - i didn't mean to sound... defensive or something like that. if you met one of my uncles, you'd be shocked at the way he talks. sometimes even i can't understand him, his southern/western accent is so strong and mumbled. it's almost comical.
"I feel worried because nobody deserves a life made of lies and pains." man, i couldn't agree more. i like that you said it makes you feel hyper active and worried too - i know i'm not alone now ;)
