Am I the only one who thinks that the holiday season is becoming more and more disgusting every year? Sure it's nice to get together with family and give and recieve. But these stupid ads that you see on TV and hear on the radio, and even see on billboards that you drive by, are really getting annoying. Hell, it's the 6th of January and I still see ( Read more... )

Bah, that'll be the next big thing the TV swings to; Valentine's Day. All that love and happiness is just too much for me. Bah, I tell you!

I wish I could read the originals. I've got a few different translations of a couple (mostly Aristotle; Ethics, Politics, and De Anima to be specific), so it can be interesting to sit down and compare the differences. My copy of Meditations is translated into Old English, which can make it difficult to read if you're not paying full attention. Bottom line is that I've never really studied Greek, and my Latin is very sketchy.

stupid valentine;s day. stupid love and happinees. well, okay, not happiness.
i'm just curious b/c am classics major (i know, not the most useful. i'll show you, world!) and the novelty of reading in original languages has not worn off yet. greek is amazing. i love it. it's a lot like russian. latin is almost too english-like.
old english sounds awesome, though. fun. and translation comparison. glad to know you enjoy the real classics. i told a guy in my dorm that i was a classics major and he said "so lots of dickens, then?" silly. good guy, though.
anyway, sounds like much fun. enjoy.

*Shakes his fist at love.*

Hey, as long as you're doing and studying what you enjoy, there's no problem. Like my old man for instance; he basically goes and works so that he'll have more money to buy more books, and then he can sit around reading them. Life is long. You've got plenty of time left to figure out what you want to do. Not everything requires a specific college degree. It's not like you need your doctorate in quantum mechanics to be happy. True dropout mentality there, eh?

I'd love to get into studying Greek sometime when I have the opportunity. I studied Latin in elementary and high school, but could really never get into it; the english-like-ness you mentioned is what really turned me off to it (though it made it a bit easier to get a quick grasp on).

Lol @ your friend. Hope things are going well over there.
