On the subject of verses... [ooc]

Okay, for anyone who knows me, knows how the word 'verse' is like a dirty Russian word. I don't get what it means but I refuse to use it for fear of the KGB. Either way, I must ask you, the world, SWS and what not RP at large.

When you use a verse- does that mean that only those verse kiddos can reply, or is it still 'open to all' but we have to ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, this probably depends by player. Personally, if I only want a certain person to tag, or to limit a post to one verse only, I will actually use the word 'locked'.

Generally speaking, however, listing a verse simply means that's the version of the character you're going to be interacting with. It might make a difference if you know the character, but it probably won't if you don't.

Again, what the verses are used for - relationships, AU, plot - depends by player. Myself, they're generally to section off plot that only involves certain other players, so those other players know it's a post that they might want to pay attention to. I also consider those AUs, but I also explain the different verses on her userinfo and most helpful players will do the same, or in a post in their characters' personal journal.

Bottom line: If the post has "OTA" on it, which means Open To All, then you're free to tag even if you have no clue what their verse is about. If it doesn't, I'd ask if non-verse specific tags are allowed, just to be

I agree with have_no-mercy.

I used to avoid verses because I instead just preferred to make characters make a choice and stick to it, but it's also really fun to play around with alternate universes -- what if they had gone down road A instead of B, made X choice instead of Y...

A lot of my verses for THIS character are just defined by the relationships he's in or not in (as described in his profile). That said, almost all of my posts are OTA because I think up different scenarios for how that post could work into each verse, usually to very different extremes. For instance, in a recent OTA post, one of his responses to why he "is too curious for his own good" was that he accidentally found out the truth about his friend's fiance -- said fiance was killed in war. When ANOTHER person responded, Jim had to admit that he stumbled across Muppet Baby porn. :(

Unless I say "LOCKED TO _____", then it's free for all, no matter what verse is listed. It just depends on what sort of answer~ will be received. Because different verses mean different character development - as characters naturally develop different depending on who they interact with, and what the situation they're currently in, is. (f.ex - I have one verse where Gabriella has met Sylar, and they're off killing people together. In another verse I have, she's in high school, in another, she works for Hammer Industries. Three very different situations, that obviously influence who and how she is)

And re: relationships for verses. Not all people want their characters to be sluts? Or it's not canon for that character, but they still respond well to another character, and you want to try something out. It's a fun way to try out multiple things at once, so why not just set up a verse to explore it with?

I tend to avoid tagging posts that are noted as being from 'verses because I can never tell what the individual player's rules are.

And Judas is the only character I even have two 'verses for, myself. Which, as you know, is so I can mess around on a very limited level with 'heaven' Judas instead of just 'hell' Judas. I play around with the idea of two journals, but can't seem to justify it to myself, since I don't play around with the 'pizza 'verse' version much in the same places I play my main Judas.

I should also add that I'm from the (I guess) somewhat unusual school of RP where most 'verses, when applicable, aren't something that you label. They're just sort of organically there, existing between two players, with each pair of characters having a slightly different reality but not feeling the need to label and declare it. And if things branch out to others, then they're in it too. And I don't know if I'm making sense anymore...
