rating communities

Okay so I did the unthinkable and applied to a rating community a few days ago...I know, I know, believe me I've always questioned the notion.but out of sheer curiousity and noticing that(for an 'ethnic' community) the standards were more like: "have some white blood in you and you have grrrrreat chances of getting in." In other words, I noticed a ( Read more... )

That mess really pissed me off. Like I told you a long time ago, you are a CUTIE!! I didn't know you were 25% Irish, but it really is not a big surprise to me.

On that note, another ignorant statement was made: the dude that tried to stick up for you said something like "It's not surprising that she [you] is 25% Irish. She's pretty light, and coming straight from Nigeria..." ....WHAT? So all Nigerians (or Africans in general) are dark skinned? And if they aren't, it's because they have a granparent or parent that is white? Come on now...

But yea... that all mixed up guy is on some crack. Now I see why he gave me an ethusiastic "NO." I'm "too black." That's fine, but I really do think that he should get kicked out of the community because he's not following the ideals that the comm was based on.

for real, I wish I pointed that out. Africans have a variety of skin tones and it's NOT because they marry outside their race(shoot we are most endogamous people).West Africa alone boasts of different types of cultures and people. Not to talk of the East, South and North. Ethiopians were not colonized(and I doubt that they intermarried) but some of them have loose curly hair and cooper toned skin.
People have so much/need to learn about us. Because in reality we know so much about everybody else whereas they know so little about us. It's just sad.

He is so obviously proud of his mixed ( ... )

I read this post and smiled. Thank you so much for everything you said about me, it really meant a lot. On the whole, I think that this whole issue is so complex, the best approach is to open room for discussion and exploration as much as possible, rather than say/do things to close it off--whether that's by making people uncomfortable or otherwise.

I think I've decided that it's best to let individual people decide for themselves what they want to identify with. If I were you personally I would most likely find myself identifying with being mixed, but then again who knows...so much of what we identify with is determined by what kind of experience society allows us to have. And, the fact that I am light-skinned and have been mistaken to be any and everything under the sun probably has a lot to do with how I've come to identify myself. In any case, however you choose to see yourself is not only alright with me, but it actually has nothing to do with me, because it's YOU!. hehe ( ... )

Linda (lovelylind) pointed this entry out to me and I've been meaning to reply for some time now. Although I was sad that you decided to opt out of joining the comm, I can understand. His ignorance annoys me as well. He wears his "mixed" heritage like some sort of badge of honor, which is really questionable. I wonder if it were not the new "in thing" to be biracial, would he still be so proud.

Oh, I was considering joining in_the_mix, but I just got tangled in my own little "lj drama." I have a feeling a few people (namely one person and their friends) there would vote based on that rather than how I look. lol No matter though.

hey :)
yeah, that guy is just...I have no words lol. I just laugh at his comments now...it's kind of comical(in an ignorant way) .
well if you really want to join the community just go ahead. It's a really chill community(so far! ;)) and I don't think a few 'no' votes will do anything! take care :)
ciao
