is there a way that i can access/upload to my afs from my home computer?

Yes, ftp will work fine. And the article Erik quoted is wrong. You can't mount it on Windows any more from off campus. You haven't been able to for a few years, any my boss and I have pointed this out to them two or three times. You think when someone who works in your own department tells you something like that, that you'd listen, but NOOOOO....

In any event, if you're not to picky, and aren't moving SENSITVE DOCUMENTS, and aren't worried about encrypting the transfer or any of that shit, Internet Explorer for Windows has a built-in ftp client. Just type ftp://afs.msu.edu/ in your address box in IE. It will prompt you for NetID and password, but its that easy. You won't be able to save to it from applications or anything, but you can copy and paste files to it just like you could to any folder on your machine. And when you're done, just close the browser window, and it disconnects.
