Allow me a moment of complete geekdom and say that my brother and I spontaneously greeted each other with the Vulcan salute today.
And then I had to go to work but that was long and boring. And then I went to see Star Trek
Short review? I liked it. The movie pretty much avoided any canon contradictions by openly declaring itself an AU. And the beauty of it is that time travel has always been part of the canon. So it's a... Canon AU? And in this one the differences are not just everyone being evil and having a beard.
Other stuff I liked:
- The redshirt (there HAD to be one) was actually the one wearing the red suit.
- Old Spock. Pretty much every second with him. Seriously, so much love for this movie having him.
- There had to be a 'damnit Jim, I'm a doctor, not an.....'
- In the space scenes there wasn't any sound. It only took them like... forty years? to get that fact right.
- The captain doesn't get the girl. Well, that one.
- Speaking of the Spock/Uhura... What I couldn't stop thinking during the movie was that it paled against the chemistry between Kirk and Spock. I am not usually one for shipping them but no slash goggles are necessary when it felt as if old!Spock was shipping them and being smug about it.
Worth seeing, definitely.
