Well, I played around with this tutorial for the coloring. Outside of that, I just cropped the original image, resized it to about 70-80 px, erased all of the background (except for her shadow) and pasted it onto a 100x100 square filled it with that shade of red.

I know it lacks in "technical jargon" but that is pretty much the gist of it so hopefully its helpful.
