“You, you shouldn’t even be watching.”
Yesung stared directly at the camera, trying her very best to be strong and not to let the tears fall, after all, this show is called Strong Heart, if she cried she wouldn’t be strong.
“Make yourself happy with her,” she continued. “Stop, stop congratulating me.”
“I really hope you live a happy life.”
She doesn’t, she hopes he feels worse.
---
Kibum sat in front of his laptop watching the latest episode of Strong Heart, the one that was filmed 2 weeks ago. He got it from a friend, Donghae, who was an avid fan of Teukigayo. He wasn’t really into Korean variety shows, he finds the American variety shows more entertaining, but he couldn’t let this episode pass him by. It’s the episode where she appears as one of the main guests. It’s part of her promotion for her latest album. He smiles at her image. Her hair was straightened and she wore simple pearl studs. She was wearing a red - no a coquelicot dress , he immediately correct his self- it was her favourite colour after all. He remembers that they’d always argue over what to call that color. To him it was red and he can’t see any orange in it, but she’d smile at him cheekily and tell him he’s color blind. She’d tell him that it was the color of wild poppies, and it’s only appropriate to call it coquelicot.
She was smiling very brightly, and Kibum was very thankful that the cameraman zooms in on her most of the time. With every smile that breaks out on her face, Kibum can’t help but smile too. She’s gone a long way, he thinks. He laughs along the crowd as a predebut picture of her pecking and advertising her turtles like a product was revealed by the Teukigayo trio. Unlike other female idols, she doesn’t try to destroy the picture, but instead mimics it by blowing Eunhyuk (or is that Eeteuk?) a flying kiss. His heart clenches a bit at the sight.
The show got a bit boring after that, after all, Kibum wasn’t really interested with what the actor Heechul was doing now, and how he was missing a certain idol promoting in Beijing right now. The hosts asked a lot of questions about Heechul’s placard which read, “Favorite foreign food: Beijing Fried Rice.”
After what seemed like an eternity to Kibum, the hosts finally turned their attention to her.
“Uh, Yesung-sshi,” the main host starts. “Tell us about your placard, it says there ‘Love Really Hurts’.”
Kibum watches her nod shyly. “Yes, actually it’s my debut song.”
Kibum smiles. He has that album after all.
“That’s an interesting placard choice, why did you choose it?” the co-host asks next.
“Ah, it’s because my third single , The Person Who Hurts the Most, is a follow-up to this song. And it has a very different feel from my second album’s title song, Why I like you.”
“Yes, we can see,” the hosts encouraged her to continue.
“Why I Like you, is a light song, and it was well received, it’s a song that lovers will appreciate,” she explains. “While the second album was all about the joy’s of loving, my third single, pays homage to the first album.”
Kibum agrees with her, after all, he’s been following her every step, and he’s already listened to her third single. It was nothing but beautiful.
“Actually, this is the first time I’m talking about this,” she said as she fiddled with her fingers. “But both are songs that are close to my heart.”
“How close?” the host prompted.
“I wrote these two songs before I even debuted,” she explained. “A lot of people said they were sad songs. And they are, I do not deny that. People even accused of me of trying to make an issue for myself for debuting with such sad songs, that's why they only made me choose one.”
“Ah, but both songs are good.”
“Yes, thank you. Both songs were inspired by my ex-boyfriend.”
Kibum paused. Her ex-boyfriend, then that meant, that the two songs he loved the most were for him.
“These are songs full of sadness,” the co-host comments. “What inspired you to write them?”
“Love really hurts, because when you love somebody truly, then you must learn to let them go,” she reasoned. “There are a lot of things you need to sacrifice for another person, and you always have to be selfless. It hurts, when you’re the one being a selfless and stupid person in a relationship.“
Sighs of sadness was heard from the crowd and from other members of the show as well. “There are rumours now, that the reason why I was gone for one year was because I had an illegal marriage in America. I, I do not deny the rumours that I was so close to marrying, but it was all before I even debuted. And no, I would like to clarify that my fiancé that time didn’t leave me.”
Kibum paled. Is she going to attack him? He suddenly felt like he can’t bear to watch it.
“What would you like to tell him, if he’s watching?” the co-host prompts.
Kibum lowers the volume, to its minimum level, not wanting to hear what she has to say to him even if he was miles away. But even at its low volume, he can hear everything clearly.
“Does, does your ex understand Korean?” the co-host asks.
Yesung laughs lightly. “He doesn’t.”
“Then why did you?” asks the main host.
“If I said it in English, then he’d understand me,” she said with a sweet smile directed at the camera. It was all she said, but Kibum can definitely tell that she didn’t want him to understand her right now. But she’s wrong. Because ever since she left for Korea, he learned how to speak the language just so he can see her.
She then bowed her head, trying to wipe away the errant tears.
“Uh, Yesung-ssi,” the host said, looking a bit lost. “Are you okay?”
“Ah, of course I’m fine,” she said as she looked up to smile at them. “It’s been three years since then, I’ve moved on! Please receive my 3rd single well. Thank you. ”
Kibum knows she’s not fine.
Neither is he.
---
“Why did you do that?” Siwon asks as he pulls Yesung furiously into the dressing room.
Yesung shrugs at him, and avoids looking at his eyes.
“Yesung! It’s been three years! Three years,” he shouts at her. “Why, why didn’t you even consult this with me, and went straight to Sooman-songsaengnim?”
“If I told you that I wanted to sing this song for my comeback, you would stop me,” she whispered.
“So you went to him to get his approval right? That way you know I won’t be able to stop you,” he said.
“The song does well,” Yesung says . “What more do you want? It’s the third on Music Bank after three days.”
“I know that,” Siwon says. He takes a deep breath to calm himself down. “I know that, but I’m not in it for the money.”
Yesung doesn’t speak.
“Why do you do this? Why do you keep on reminding yourself of him?”
“I have to,” she explains. “After all, Kibum gave me this chance to be an idol. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for him.”
And then suddenly, tears are running down her face, and she’s wiping at them furiously, because she doesn’t want to cry in front of Siwon. She brings a hand to her mouth to prevent herself from bawling. She turns around, because she can’t take it anymore.
Siwon’s anger suddenly disappears. He moves next to her side as if on an autopilot, and hugs her.
“Yesung,” he whispers. He can feel her shaking in his embrace, the tears making her sway with intensity. “Forget him. Forget about him. He didn’t give this to you. You made it for yourself. Stop thinking that you owe him.”
Yesung only cries harder as she turns around to return Siwon’s hug, eager to use Siwon’s shoulder as temporary relief to the pain she feels.
Siwon combs his hands through her hair. And he wonders, when did he ever behave this way? Yesung wasn’t the only talent he’s handled, but she’s the only one who can break him with every tear that fell down her cheek. “Yesung, Yesung, Yesung.”
___
“What do you think of my lips today?” Yesung asked Kibum as she pouted at him cutely.
“They’re red,” he deadpans, placing a finger on her lips.
“Asshole!” she says as she bites on his finger hard.
“Ow, that hurt!” Kibum winces.
“They’re not red,” she tells him.
“Then what is it? “ he humours her.
“They’re wild poppies! It says so in the label.”
“They’re not, it’s red.”
“And I looked it up on the net, wild poppies is coquelicot,” she continues, ignoring what he said earlier.
“It’s red to me,” he says shrugging as he stands in front of a mirror trying to fix his tie.
Suddenly, she’s standing next to him. “What are you? Twelve? You can’t even tie it properly,” she says as her fingers pull on the tie.
He smiles at her sheepishly. “Yesung-ie…”
“There, all done!” she says , patting his tie for good measure, and she turns him around to see himself on the mirror. “You look handsome, Kibummie.”
“I do, right?”
She smacks him lightly and circles her hands on his waist while she laid her chin on his shoulder.
“I love you, you Bum,” she says.
“I love you too,” he replies with a smile, and then suddenly his lips meets hers.
He was stunned for a second.
“See, your lips are a bit like coquelicot now!” she points out. “It’s red, but it has tinges of orange there.”
“I see.”
“From now on, coquelicot is my favourite color. It’s like the wild poppies that grow near our school.”
___
Siwon looked at Yesung who was currently sleeping in his car. After her crying episode, he told Yesung’s manager and driver that he’ll be the one to bring her home, and they agreed wholeheartedly, because they don’t know what to do with her, and besides, they knew that if somebody could make Yesung feel better, it would be Siwon.
She was wearing a red dress that a fan sent her. He shakes his head, because he knows that it wasn’t a fan who sent the dress, but Kibum himself. He can’t help but hold the steering wheel tighter. Kibum, it was like acid on his tongue.
Siwon hated how Kibum could make Yesung cry and break down with just a memory. He hated how stubborn Yesung was for wanting to live in the past. He hated the industry for taking advantage of Yesung’s talent and emotions and exposing them to the public. For the first time in his life, he hated being a producer, because he made Yesung a celebrity.
Yesung was a talent he discovered through the power of the internet. An anonymous guy, who he later found out to be Kibum, Yesung’s ex boyfriend, sent in an audition tape of Yesung singing her own version of I’m I Love by Ra.D. Yesung was looking straight at the camera, as if she was singing to the guy who was filming it, and Siwon was blown by the intensity of the girl’s stares and the emotions she conveyed. He knew from that moment on, that this girl would be a very good investment for SME. He was quick to send a letter of acceptance to that anonymous sender.
Now he wishes that he didn’t. But, if he didn’t then he would never meet this amazing person.
---
“I’m sorry,” Kibum says tearfully. “It was a moment of weakness, and you were too far away, and I was too drunk.”
“Stop it,” Yesung says calmly, and Kibum looks up, hoping to find forgiveness in her eyes. She’s not crying, he notes. She just looks tired.
“Don’t give me an excuse. Stop it, Kibum.”
“Give me a chance, Yesung, you know how much I love you,” Kibum pleads.
“I can’t give you a chance,” Yesung shakes her head.
“Did three years mean anything to you?” Kibum asks angrily. He knew he did a grave mistake of sleeping with someone else, but he truly is sorry and he does love Yesung after all.
“I should be the one asking you that,” Yesung quietly answers. “Kibum, I’d like to give you a chance, but if giving you a chance means screwing another person’s life, then I can’t be that selfish.”
“What do you mean?”
“She called me, she’s pregnant with your child. I’m a girl too, Kibum. I may love you, but I won’t subject other people to suffering just because I’m selfish.”
“You’re being stupid, I don’t even like her! Why are you pushing me to her?” he’s really confused now, his girlfriend shouldn’t have such a poor heart.
“I never thought I’d say this, but someone, she needs you more than I need you now,” she said. “Do me a favour, Kibum, and take responsibility.”
“Yesung, don’t do this to us, don’t do this to me,” Kibum pleaded. “Is this your way of punishing me? I can accept you breaking up with me, but for you to push me to her?”
“You’re not the only one hurting, idiot,” Yesung snaps, and finally tears are falling and then she bites her lips. “I don’t like this at all, but who says that the best decision is always the one that will benefit you the most? It hurts me so much , and I want to reach over and slap you. But I can’t. I love you, Kibum, remember that. I will always love you. And I know that you love me too, but, Kibum, we’re being selfish.”
She brings up her hand and inspects it. “See this,” she says pointing at the engagement ring that Kibum gave her three months ago. “Take it Kibum, and give it to her. Marry her. Marry her for me.”
“Don’t,” Kibum holds her hand , effectively stopping her from removing the ring. “Don’t make it harder for me. I’ll marry her, if that’s what you really want. You were always too good, anyways. Don’t remove that ring. Don’t throw it away. Don’t give it to me. I won’t accept it. This ring. You know what that ring is for, that’s my grandmother’s ring, you deserve it. You should be the one I’m marrying. You should have that. It will kill me if you will only give it to me.”
“Kibum, it’s for the best,” she says.
“Not for us, it isn’t.”
“You’ll get married to her Kibum, and you’ll be fine, and you’ll move on. I, I will move on too,” she said as she stood up. “I’d want to be invited to your wedding,” was the last thing she said before she left the restaurant.
Kibum didn’t even bother following her. If Yesung’s decision was final then there’s no point in contesting it. But he knew, that both of them will never move on. He knew for sure that he will love Yesung always.
____
Yesung wakes up in a bed that’s entirely different from her white-covered bed, but she can’t say that she’s not familiar with the room. After all, this is where Siwon , her producer, brings her whenever she has breakdowns like that. She didn’t know when exactly it started, but he seemed to think that he can take care of her better if she was in his house instead of her own apartment.
“Oh you’re awake,” a voice calls from the door. It was Siwon.
“Yes, about that,” she starts. “I’m sorry for earlier.”
Siwon lets himself in the guest room he has especially for Yesung and settles himself on the bed. “Look, you’re so tired you can’t even remove your make-up,” he affectionately says as he wipes the smudged lipstick off Yesung’s lips.
When he has successfully removed her lipstick, he smiles at her. Yesung smiles at him sheepishly.
“I give you too much trouble, oppa,” she says.
“You’re worth the trouble, okay?”
She nods shyly as she feels herself blush. And then suddenly, Siwon’s pulling her towards him. He has his arms around her, rubbing her back soothingly and Yesung is frozen. She can feel butterflies in her stomach and then she feels warm and calm.
“Don’t do that again, for me, Yesung? Don’t make me worry about you,” Siwon says as he kisses her on top of her head.
Yesung could only nod weakly. Her brain is working overtime as memories of Kibum smiling at her come back, and then slowly morph into images of Siwon hugging her and congratulating her after every performance. She hears Kibum’s voice on the phone, congratulating her from the other side of the world, after every stage and then it changes to when Siwon squeezes her hand before every filming.
And then finally everything stops, and her brain could only process Kibum’s bright smile and Siwon’s dimple. She’s never been more torn in her life.
__
“Kibum, what are you doing here?” Yesung asks as a guy she hasn’t seen for such a long time enters her mother’s flower-shop.
“An invitation,” he simply says, and then Yesung’s chest constricts and she feels like she couldn’t breathe. The invitation has a coquelicot ribbon, she eyes it warily.
“It’s her favourite color,” Kibum said, shrugging as he avoided looking at Yesung, the girl who he should be marrying.
“I see, she has fine taste,” Yesung says with a smile as she tries to fight back tears and keep herself from saying , no, don’t do it. She turns around instead to fix the bouquet that was ordered earlier. Kibum was still trying not to look at her.
A bell signalled the arrival of a customer. Yesung turns around and suddenly she meets Kibum’s eyes. Flushing, she bows her head.
“That must be the customer,” she quietly said.
Kibum nods to himself and then clears his throat. “Yesung, I want to give this to you,” he says as he hands over an envelope with the pink SME logo.
“What is this?” she asks him.
“It’s your acceptance letter from SME,” he answers. “I sent in a video, it’s the video where you sang I’m In Love by Ra.D.”
“Oh,” was the only thing Yesung could say, she was trying to remember that video. It was the video she gave to Kibum for their first anniversary.
“Your audition is for the 18th this month,” Kibum continued. “I got you a ticket that’s due on the 17th.”
“Seventeenth?” she asks. “Isn’t that the day of your wedding?”
“Yes, you need to go to Seoul. Fulfill your dreams, Yesung. You’ve always wanted to be a singer right?” he tells her and he smiles that same bright smile.
Yesung can feel her eyes tear up. She swallows a lump in her throat, and tries to smile back at Kibum. “Thank you.”
“I’ll be your biggest fan! Hwaiting!” Kibum says in a slightly-accented Korean.
----
“Dad?”
Kibum removed his earphones as soon as he saw his now-awake son standing at the door. He soon calls the boy to sit next to him.
“Are you watching Yesung again , daddy?” his son, Sungjin asks.
“Yes,” he answers him truthfully.
“Why do you like her so much, daddy?” he asks.
“She’s a great singer,” Kibum explains.
“Ahhh, then, Daddy, I’ll become a singer for you when I grow up! So that you’ll like me too!” his son beams at him.
“You don’t need to be a singer,” Kibum ruffles his son’s hair. “I love you, Sungjin.”
“I love you too, daddy,” the boy says sleepily. “Daddy?”
“Yes, Sungjin?”
“I wish Yesung was my mom,” Sungjin says. “You like Yesung enough to be my mom, plus I’m sure she won’t leave us.”
Kibum could only hug his son tighter.
“I hope I get to meet Yesung someday, I like her too, daddy, you know!” Sungjin says before yawning. “I hope she isn’t married yet, or she doesn’t have a baby yet! SO that daddy, maybe if we go to Korea, to come to your parents’ house, we can see Yesung! And then you’ll fall in love. And she’ll be my mommy now!”
And with that, Sungjin gave a final yawn and made himself comfortable on Kibum's lap.
Kibum pulled out the earphones from his laptop and turned on his iTunes.
He typed in "I'm in Love."
And he played the video Yesung gave to him five years ago.
If only that was easy, he whispered as he runs his hands through Sungjin's hair. If only.
