The "First Nations" a.k.a. Native Canadians/North Americans have always been a Nation within a Nation. This distinction is simply one to recognize the fact that there are differences between the way we live and they way they do and that they were here first and therefore have a few different rights--or so I understand it. I'm not entirely sure why they are debating the status of the Qebecois as a Nation, but I'm sure it has something to do with their status as a people who did a good bit of the exploration and settlement of Canada way back in the day ( ... )

I think to be considered a quebecois you also have to be french speaking.

You assuredly do not... I'm an "official" resident of Quebec, and my French is far from perfect. And I know people who have lived here their entire lives who know much less French than I do. In fact, my mother was one of them until she moved to Ontario in the mid-70s. Of course many would prefer that all did speak French, and if you live further east it would probably be difficult to get by without it, but there's nothing close to an official requirement.

This is obviously a poor attempt to please people, but really is it going to work?I think it might. A lot of Quebecois just want some sort of recognition that they're different. A lot of those who want to separate wouldn't want to give up Canadian passports, money, etc. They just want to be recognized as "a distinct society" that is part of Canada ( ... )
