see, i know that's sort of a joke, but things like this make me crazy! i was talking about this with my fiancee yesterday that things from computer parts to cell phones to cars all damage animals and use animal biproducts to run.....so why is it ok for someone to be a complete vegan but use an ipod that is greased and oiled and built using animal byproducts, definately NOT procured kindly, but it's not ok to eat a delicious peice of meat?
this is my serious question of the day that i don't know the answer to!
The answer is, it's not. You are correct - it's almost impossible to, by your own actions (or specifically, lack of actions), not exist without benefitting from animals being killed (and typically mistreated before they are killed). If for no other reason that you rely on other people all the time (bus drivers, doctors, etc.), and chances are that *those* people eat meat.
My partner asked me last night if I would eat a meal made with rat meat (like pingugirl, I love, own, and volunteer to work with rats). I said, 'maybe'. It's a tough question, 'cause I interact with rats daily, and have never really petted a cow
( ... )
thanks for your two cents! I just find the whole thing seriously aggrivating, because i've never come into contact with a non *ahem* militant vegan and it really bothers me that while i do my part and try to live a very conciencious life, i'm sort of attacked by *some* vegans for the choices i make, and it seems like those same people will not abide by or answer to the question i brought forth here.
I actually just had a vegan guest at my apartment over the weekend, and we went to this great ethiopian restaurant that has vegan soft serve ice cream.
I didn't try it as I was full from dinner, but she absolutely loves it.
i used to be a vegetarian, and then i realized that regardless of the situation, no animal is ever going to feel guilt and shame from ripping me limb from limb in order to fill it's need of protien etc etc.
humans are naturally omnivors. humane and free range chicken and eggs, and organic meats are much nicer than every other animal on the planet.......
I hear what you are saying about animals not having the same sort of conciousness that we do, this is why being veg'n is such a personal choice.
As for eggs unless you have your own farm for personal use it's impossible to have eggs laid in humane conditions. Even small family farms still need to make a profit. I'll try and find the article I was reading last night.
Here's a new type of egg farming that I just came across while trying to find the original article. It makes reference to the facts of the original article so you'll see what I'm talking about.
I actually traced my eggs to the farm that they came from last night. There's a system that codes canadian eggs and then by going to eggsactrace.com you can find out about the eggs you purchased. I sent an email out to see if I can communicate directly with the egg farmer to find out the conditions of their chickens.
I also came across the recommendations for care and handling of egg laying chickens which organic producers follow. It still said that being transported up to 36hours without food and water is acceptable, and that beak trimming is regularly performed as it is preferred over feather pecking and possible cannibalism caused by overly aggressive birds. :/
