Global catastrophes have probably happened many times. Apparently, if mankind just vanished, within 1000 years nothing but the Great Pyramids would be left to show we were ever here, all the cities, metal, man-made products would be gone. I saw a programme about it. It was not an ' end of the world ' thing, it was just showing how all we've built would crumble and rot and seem to any alien ship flying over the planet as if it never existed. I found that fascinating, and think global wipeouts have happened before, and the evidence is completely buried.
I think I'll just stick a paper bag over my head and hum.
I know, I wanted to watch that program when it was on, but I had class both nights. Since I love all that Armageddon shit, I figured it would be right up my alley.
It is, actually. I found this clip posted on another site and while Roland Emmerich is not my favorite filmmaker, I thought the trailer by itself was pretty fucking good. It gave me goosebumps. Goosebumps = awesome.

That will be a great day for several reasons: 1) The world does come to an "end" (which itself is awesome) and some people would be running around saying "I told you so". 2) Nothing happens. Many people become disappointed or relieved while others run around saying "I told you so". 3) During Christmas time. If the world ends there will be people upset about not getting their gifts in time. If nothing happens, then the people who thought the world was going to end- and therefore didn't buy any gifts- are going to have to do some massive last minute shopping.
Doomsday stories: I liked the Scientific American article "An Earth Without People" better. (There's more in the print version than the online version, so check it out in a library if you can: June 2007.)
There was a show on TV awhile ago about that- what the world would be like if people suddenly disappeared. I remember that small dogs would all die off and cats would learn how to fly.
Cool trailer. And really interesting topic. In fact I just read a research paper of 2012 and how its date can be traced throughout history. From Nostradamus, the Cid, and many many others. If you go to the Nasa's website, in the lower corner in teeny tiny print, you will find information about a comet which will pass earth in December of 2012. The problem with it is, it will be so close, if it changes course even a fraction of a hair, it could collide.
