You're right. My prof would be put out if I turned in my final paper knotted into a quipu. But no worries. It's printed on paper and I would never part with the quipu. ;-P
I know there's a guy at Harvard who thinks some of the knots are phonetic. The numeric knots have been deciphered, but there's academic controversy over what the colors of the strings may have meant, and whether or not the untranslatable knots represent phonemes or logograms. If they do, it would be a big deal--it would attribute written language to the Incas, and all those scholarly types in Peru would think that was just swell. ;-)

LOL! They're pretty cool.
I just saw an article somewhere in a magazine or on line about someone getting closer to figuring out the knot code. Do you remember seeing that?
