The lots of sex thing wouldn't bother me, but I don't really read BDSM. I'll definitely check out 'North and South' and 'Gone With The Wind'.

I must second the Kushiel thing, though yes, there is BDSM, there is also a lot of plot, making the BDSM more scarce. I was hooked and I adored it. (But okay, I do quite like the BDSM.)

I've never read Gaskell, but I've seen the series, and it is stunning.

If you want to combine fantasy with period.....There's a book called 'Sorcery and Cecilia, or the Enchanted Chocolate Pot' by Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevener. You may not find it in a library though, they're American writers...

I've looked on all the catalogues for the local libraries and none of them have it. I'll see if I can find it cheap second hand somewhere.
