it's not even the elementary students though- it's the older students, the ones from Shay thay are the issue. The kids are fine, but they grow up in bad neighborhoods and families and have role models like R. Kelly who says, "I axed you a question" (not really relevant but that peeves me when I have to correct the kids and they bring that up). City schools are great because you can really make a difference in certain student's lives, but once they hit that age where they need to choose if they're going to be a gangsta' or an educated individual, which do you think most will choose around that section? Horrible to think that way, but that seems to be how it is. I blame the city personally, and the parents. You should meet some of the parents- real 'characters' who can't speak a friggin word of English.

hey danielle, i just came across your LJ! I'm bored at work and scrolling threw. I'm sorry you went through that. I didn't realize till I took an Incl. Ed class this year that Shay Middle School is one of the most poverty ridden schools in the US... even compared to NYC and LA! Right in CNY. Who knew.

Mine came when I decided to break up a fight between two girls that took place immediately after school one day. I saw that there was some blood on the floor, so my instinct was just to get the two girls seperated as soon as possible, so without thinking, I jumped between the two girls and pushed them apart at about shoulder height. Sure I did the right thing, but if there was blood involved, I didn't even think to check to see if either of the girls had a weapon in her hands before I got between the two of them (and for the district I was in, that was definitely a possibility), plus as a young male teacher, I just touched two female students near their breasts. I got lucky in both cases; the blood was from a punch to the nose that one of the ( ... )
