An excerpt from mine and Reese's conversation earlier this evening, where she correlates my sense of "falling" to a physical fall:

claireseyk: it's just like when you physically trip and fall
claireseyk: falling is scarey because you think you know what's coming
claireseyk: but this is one of those times that you fall into a big pile of pillows
