Actually, President Garfield was shot by an embittered, job-less lawyer, Charles Guiteau, who supported Garfield vehemently during the campaign.

Extremely crazy, Guiteau thought that his support throughout the often-bitter campaign between Garfield and Winfield Scott Hancock--with a razor-thin margin in the popular vote--would result in Garfield granting Guiteau a job.

No less a job that Guiteau wanted than being Ambassador to France.

Guiteau shot Garfield on July 2, 1881 and Garfield was left in that debilitating state until he finally succumbed to death two months later.

Guiteau was hung the following year.
