part i.
Character name: Ruby Van Alst
Fandom: Ruby
Species (vampire, werewolf, what have you): Witch, something like half-human (fae ancestry!)
Character powers: Ruby is still learning, but she has what she calls "the gift". She is descended from not just any fae, but a queen, specifically Jerisavlja, the vila queen, and the particular Slavic folklore referenced dictates that female progeny of vila and mortals be referred to as a witch. Her abilities include:
- Companionship and communication with animals, plants, and supernatural beings, some examples being ghosts, dryads, and phoenixes. She demonstrates some ability to command them, as well, which is largely instinctual for everyone involved-they don't seem to obey her because it's compulsory, they do it because they trust her.
- Psychokinesis, ESP, whatever you want to call it: she Knows Things, which in a roleplay context is contingent on player communication and OOC agreement for all involved, naturally. Ruby may pick up dangerous or foreboding omens, simply "feel" things about other people, or get full-on flashes of memory with a touch.
- Casting spells! The key component of using magic. Which is fairly self-explanatory, but she's quite varied and more powerful than her mentor, Isabelle-canonically she can cause storms or at least manipulate the weather, or turn herself invisible, which was the first spell she learned. She can also, over the course of, it should be noted, months and months at minimum, heal people who are suffering from what should be permanent injuries like loss of a limb, paralysis, etc., as in her former boyfriend Orion's case.
- Some psychic abilities, like telekinesis, which only manifests in periods of ''extreme'' emotional distress, and telepathy, which necessitates a great deal of focusing on her target to use, due to it being underdeveloped. This telepathy also manifests as a subtle charismatic compulsion/mind control, in which she simply makes herself irresistible (sexually, where Orion was concerned) or at least incredibly magnetic (as with a stage magician in her childhood). This talent remains seldom-used, due to her personal objections to the usage of mind control, but it's there. Unlike many other forms of inducing a trance, it's subtle, and thus trickier than expected.
- Her most dangerous ability, and the one she's most unsure about, is dream exploration, and channeling the raw energy of her own dreams into waking action. She can use this power to to go into her Dreamworld, from which point she can kill conscious people in the real world...like her father, who was her first lesson in its use. She can also otherwise maim or presumably assist people using this ritual, though she hasn't tested its positive uses yet, and either way, there's not a hell of a lot they can do about it.
part ii.
1.) Is it acceptable for your character to be mind-controlled or persuaded? How susceptible are they to mind control, hypnotism, or suggestion? Ruby is not susceptible to it at all. Her mind is very sensitive and lashes back at any attempts to control her, as well, so anyone trying will probably be in for a hell of a headache. She is still susceptible to scientific means of control, however, or some roundabout fashion that involves possessing her or a ritual to let down her natural defenses.
2.) Is it acceptable for your character to have their mind read? Does this include traumatic memories? What is their mind like (disturbing, orderly, joyful, surprisingly empty, etc.)? If the character has psychic walls or preventative measures against psychic interference, please explain. She has pretty significant natural walls that she does take down to communicate with trees and the like, though she does so without really thinking. She can also occasionally read others' minds, which I imagine would open the channel of communication somewhat.
3.) Are thoughts mentioned in narration acceptable for a telepath to pick up? Nope.
4.) What about emotions, in the case of an empath? What sort of general emotional reading would such a character receive from yours? Emotions, yes. Absolutely. And she'd probably pick up some in return.
5.) Are there any aspects of your character's mind, emotions, or memories you would like to be picked up, mentioned, or used in character? Conversely, is there anything that should not be noticed, or at least never mentioned? The very observant and practiced will probably eventually notice she lies about her background and who she is extensively.
part iii.
1.) Physically speaking, what stands out about your character? Imposing size? Physical scarring? Tattoos? Ruby is a tall, pretty girl with distinctly ridiculous long red Little Mermaid hair, and she's prone to wearing very low-cut clothing, so yes. She also has slightly pointed top incisors that hint at her vila ancestor, though they're not elongated like a vampire's might be.
2.) Is your character immune to any of the following: poisons, chemical agents, telekinetic influence, radiation, or types of illnesses? Not currently.
3.) Is your character physiologically different from a human in any way? This can include their blood, skin, hair, et cetera being made up of something unusual or simply differing in construction and durability. Arguably she is sort of magically composed, and it's a part of her very essence, but the physical texture and composition of her body resembles a human's. Just not so much with her mind.
4.) Are you amenable to having your character be harmed in any way? How far are you comfortable with injury to you character going? Does this include being fed on by vampires, willingly or unwillingly? I am totally down with injury, as long as there's prior discussion. At some point, if it's appropriately poignant/theatrical, I'd be down with near-death or death, but that'd have to be a way off and have significant build-up. I am not sure whether "fairies and their descendants taste delicious" would apply to her or not, as there are no vampires in her canon, but...probably.
5.) Is it acceptable for other characters with abilities of shapeshifting or disguise to imitate your character? Does this include ability mimicry? Her appearance, yes. Her powers, no.
part iv.
1.) Can your character's presence or aura be noticed by other characters, and how would it look/feel to them? How would it manifest to a character with no supernatural abilities, if at all? Her "aura" is probably very soft and golden with streaks of red, like a sunrise. There is, however, a fleck or two of black. While she has no visible aura to non-supernatural characters, she does have ongoing low-level charismatic pull, which YMMV may apply; it may just be that she seems really nice!
2.) Can your character be affected by magic spells and curses? Yes. She can also cast them right back, though.
3.) Can your character be affected by sin and corruption, and be tempted toward expressing their darker urges (of whatever flavor)? Yes. Absolutely.
4. What sort of sins is the character prone toward, and how might they best be tempted, if you are interested in such an event? Lust, wrath, pride.
5.) Are you amenable to the character receiving prophetic visions, including as part of a plot? Yes.
part v.
1.) Is canon-puncturing or fourth-walling acceptable? We encourage people to tread extremely lightly with allowing their character to learn they are fictional. No, please, though I do not think it's particularly likely, given the relative obscurity of her canon.
2. Is threadjacking allowed? Under what circumstances? Yes, and it's encouraged! As long as there aren't 350+ comment threads I can't reply to ICly or anything.
3. Is it acceptable for canonmates that are updated further than yours to inform your character of events yours has not yet experienced? Not really applicable, as she's from the end of her canon.
4. Are there triggering or upsetting topics you would like other characters to avoid mentioning to yours for the sake of continued comfort (racist words, homophobia, self-injury, etc.)? Not really; if it's truly IC, go for it. Bear in mind that Ruby will react accordingly, though, to any bigotry.
5. Are there any additions you would like us to make to this survey? I keep meaning to put a scent thing in here. Uh, Ruby wears a drop or two of heliotrope essential oil every day. If she wears some other kind of perfume, I will make a note of it.
