Summary: A prequel of sorts to my story, "Different Realities". How Samantha's grandmother Ethel ended up with dementia

All my life, I have always known that my grandparents would not live forever. That is just the way things are. But I never expect Fate to step in and be absolutely cruel about it.

It all started a few months ago when my mother got a call from her sister that their mother, Ethel, was found wandering the streets of the neighboring town. A nice and caring couple had found her and took care of her before they were able to reach us. My mother and her sister left quickly to get her and bring her home.

When they finally brought my Gran home, she was confused and thought that she was coming for supper. It was an absolute shock that she would wander so far away and we didn't even know how she had ended up there. Did she take a bus or a taxi or do the unthinkable and walked all the way there? I was so relieved that she was found safe and sound and nothing bad had happened to her but I was to find out that I was so wrong about everything.

The next day, my mother ended up taking my Gran to the hospital due to some eccentric behavior and there, to our horror, the doctors run tests and found that she had suffered a massive stroke that had done irreversible damage. My Granny Ethel’s long and short term memories were gone. I can vividly recall rushing with my sister to the hospital to be with my grandmother in order to help relieve my mother and aunt who had been there for hours. When I arrived at my grandmother’s bedside, I was taken aback by how tiny she looked lying in the bed because she had always seemed to be larger than life to me. My Granny was clinging to my aunt’s hand as if it was her only life jacket and she was adrift at sea.
