The modem just plugs into your computer and can only be used by your computer. A router has a built-in mini network and you can plug in several computers to share an Internet connection!

A lot of DSL boxes can be both a router and a modem.

What keithlard said, basically. A modem is normally a little box that plugs into a USB port, whereas a router supports multiple network connections - most reasonably modern laptops and computers have a network socket built-in (normally above the USB ports on a desktop, on a laptop usually next to the dial-up modem socket.) Strictly speaking a "broadband router" includes a broadband modem.

How come? Sounds like a downgrade to me (assuming you're not talking about internet access using your mobile) ...

Well I use the comp a lot and I don't like the fact that the house is being filled with whatever it is that that little box sends out. I know theres no proof it's dangerous or not but I don't really need it I only ever use the laptop in one location so it's also a waste of money really!
