the best way to listen to the trout quintet is to pair it with the song that "inspired" it. the fourth movement is variations on a lied he wrote a few years prior, and it reveals a lot about his composition process.
anyway, thanks! and an opportunity to travel to holland is certainly one i wouldn't turn down...

yay! a whole term of non-americaness. that should be quite tubular.
also, since marcus andronicus spoke of the name as well, i must reveal my rather lame introduction to the music of schubert (franz anyway) was the theme music played for the tv series "wings." because of that piece of music i deliberately sought out more from him, stumbling across first his unfinished symphony and then the beauty of the elf-king, which i cannot properly spell, not to mention my life-long obsession with what i believe is his orchestration of ave maria, but i am unsure. anywho... via franz, i was led to schumann and his amazing dichterliebe (as well as his wife clara, who was amazing in her own right). thus, my grouping of those Schu's has long been the creators of some of my most loved music.
and welcome to another random and probably undereducated romp into the mind of tyler's favorite things.

:) the Schu's should all be appreciated!
Here's some more (relatively useless) Schubert "trivia"!:
Did you know that Schubert was more than likely a homo? He had a lot of suspicious "lifelong friends," and died of a nasty case of syphilis.
Did you know that Schubert's arrangement of "Ave Maria" is actually technically titled "Ellens Dritter Gesang," meaning "Ellen's Third Song" and is from a set of lieder based on Sir Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake"? It's the only one that is truly famous, but I'm singing "Ellens Zweiter Gesang" at my recital on May 19th, which you should come to, by the way. I'm doing a Schubert set, with "Die Junge Nonne" and "Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen."
