Character Information
Name: Rin Okumura

Fandom: Blue Exorcist

Timeline Summary: chapter 14 "A Gamble"

Background: Rin in the Wiki (manga-timeline) Blue Exorcist in general

Personality: A kid like Rin Okumura could be easily dismissed as a hotheaded youth with too much spare time on his hands. He’s as brash as he is passionate, an empathetic young man who has a slight case of tunnel vision. In some ways, he is as typical as any fifteen year old: he is slowly noticing the other sex, his confidence is low, and he has moments when he feels as if he can do anything. He also enjoys pulling pranks on his friends, has something of a rivalry with his twin brother, and can be sarcastic when the need arises. Rin enjoys cooking, being outside, and he has a tendency to disobey direct orders. But like other kids his age, there are factors that help influence his actions, and events in his life that have shaped him into the individual he is becoming. Despite the fact that he is the son of Satan, Rin tries hard to put his parentage aside to focus on his goals. The results are usually mixed between the reactions of others and his own self confidence.

Rin has always been the odd one out. As a child, he felt ostracized from other children because of his volatile temper. He would become vicious when angered, and his strength (impressive even at a young age), would lead others to label him as a demon and a monster.

It was difficult for him to understand the connection between his strength and their fear, but he knew that it was his actions and his power that alienated them. To him, their words were unfounded, and had they been based in any fact he believed it had more to do with how he had been able to cause that much pain to his classmates and show no remorse (or sentience) while doing so. His temper as a child was as wild and unrestrained as the strength he displayed. These factors led to a small confrontation between Shiro Fujimoto and Rin, father and son, which damaged a few of his Fujimoto’s ribs and left Rin with a resolution he could attempt to stick to. After the incident, Rin resolved to use his strength for something good, in emulation of his father. Try as he might to abate his initial hotheaded reactions, it was his willingness to help others (whether they wanted his help or not) which proved to be his undoing. He was too strong to be seen as human by the townspeople and he often fell into trouble by causing more violence than needed. While Rin would feel as if there was little he could do to change the image already constructed for him, he never stopped trying to find a way to be helpful to those around him. After graduating from middle school, Rin started looking for a steady job rather than pursuing higher education. He felt that schools would be better off without his personality and he doubted that he would learn anything or be of use to anyone while inside of a classroom. Rin hoped to have been of assistance to someone and to make his adoptive father proud of him.

However, after the death of his father, joining an Exorcist cram school, and coming in contact with classmates he would later consider friends, his temper soon lost some of its dangerous edge and he was able to relate to others on a more personal level - but the consideration was due in part to his own inability to come to terms with what he was. He pulled back his anger (and felt it dissipate) as he grew closer to his classmates. Yet he would always remember who he was. He feared their reaction if they ever found out that he was the son of Satan. As he grew closer to his friends from the Exorcist Cram School, the calmer he began to feel. His outbursts changed from angry declarations to childish proclamations. His conflict between hiding his parentage and protecting his friends from himself came to a peak during a fight with the Earth King, Amaimon. His relation to Satan was revealed to his classmates, and soon followed their open distrust towards him. Rin has yet to speak to them (as of chapter 14) in a proper manner and while he has an idea of what they may feel, he is not ready to see how much farther their fear (or hate) of him will go. During an examination, Rin lost control of himself and the blue flames he had inherited. The result was a frightening realization for his classmates. While they were taken away for a proper explanation of Rin's condition, Rin had been taken to a religious counsel to have his fate decided. Unwilling to bend to the will of those aging exorcists, Rin fought back with his ambitions and promised to himself to train harder so that those around him were left unharmed by his flames.

Generally, when he is in a good mood, Rin can be an easy going (if head strong) kid. He enjoys being around those he cares about and wants nothing more than to keep them safe from harm and from the harm he can (unwittingly) bring to them. When put in a bad mood, Rin still manages to focus on protecting but those thoughts are at times overcome with the need to eliminate the danger. Around others, Rin is quiet. He listens attentively to conversations and carefully watches over his friends from a distance. At times he'll contribute and speak, usually with a question or a subtle remark. He can be sarcastic at times, at other times a joker and a deliberate delinquent (due to his unwillingness to follow the rules since there is always another way). Other times, he'll offer his own brand of comic relief or a comment meant to join in a conversation. He's slowly become comfortable enough with a set of friends that he can easily communicate with, rather than to revert to his old habits of staying away from others. Yet when confronted by an enemy, he reverts to his old habits of yelling first and asking questions later. He is impolite, but not because he intends to hurt others.

Rin is supportive and very protective of those around him. He doesn't see himself as the center of attention, choosing instead to help in the background. He can take the main stage if he must, but in general he'd rather remain as a supporter if he believes that a person deserves the attention. Before he unleashed his demonic powers, Rin felt he could not rise above the expectations others had for him. He didn't believe he could hold down a "respectable" job because of how quick he was to anger. His emotions had always been uncontrollable, and in a way he had no desire to take hold of them. Rin would have rather gone with the flow and allowed things to happen, yet at times, he would stand and hope that the best possible outcome was still within reach. Remaining as a child would have been impossible but something he wished he could do. Being saddled with his mental burden, he focuses on other things to keep his mind off of the facts of his new life. He cooks, finds odd jobs to do around him, talks to his new friends or trains his body and his mind - anything to get him thinking of other things.

Despite his situation, Rin is an optimist, through and through. Though constantly discouraged, he holds onto the hope of becoming stronger and protecting those around him. There is just a single blemish upon his optimistic conscious: his parentage. As he encounters various people and their reactions towards his relation to Satan (along with his own hatred towards his biological father) Rin seesaws between maintaining his individuality and lumping himself into the same category as other demons he has seen.

Powers, Skills, and Abilities :

Power: His Blue Flames (a hereditary trait) are kept under control through the use of the demon blade, Kurikara. Rin maintains some control over these flames when the sword is sheathed since the flames spark in accordance to his emotions. He can use them without the use of the sword, since they are a part of him. However when the sword is drawn (by either another person or himself) the power of the flames spiral out of his control and Rin becomes a danger to anyone within his immediate area. They engulf Rin, leaving him unaffected and protected while everything around him burns. The damage caused by Blue Flames is usually severe, unless the injured victim is given immediate medical attention. They burn everything they come in contact with, usually leaving nothing but a damaged body, a withered corpse, or ashes.

Skill: Cooking is the only skill Rin acknowledges as something he is good at. He enjoys cooking and loves especially to do it for others rather than for himself. Rin has been cooking from an early age, due to a life at an all boys monastery where a good meal was hard to find. Rin took it upon himself to prepare these meals for himself and the rest of the boys during his stay there. At the Academy, he has even gone so far as to challenge a stove spirit (the Japanese equivalent to an English brownie or hob).

Abilities: Due to his demonic parentage, Rin possesses super strength. He’s able to lift a car with no difficulty and he can stop a rampaging demon with his head, incurring no injuries to himself. Along with his strength, he has regenerative powers. Most injuries are healed within minutes of the initial trauma, allowing him to continue fighting without worrying about his own health. While he dislikes this ability because of its monstrous implications (only a “monster” would be able to heal as quickly as he does, Rin mentions at one point), he takes full advantage of it by luring enemies to himself to keep his friends from immediate danger. Rin can also understand demons who do not speak with human words. He cites this communication as “demon telepathy”. He can also manipulate the Blue Flames to use as both an offensive and defensive weapon, but his control over his flames is minimal. He trains hard to keep them under control, which he managed to an extent. While it is not a labeled ability, Rin’s tail acts as his main point of weakness. He can be temporarily stopped if his tail has been pulled.

Weaponry: In order to maintain the majority of his demonic powers under control, Rin must carry the demon sword Kurikara at all times. Kurikara acts as a catalyst for Rin’s blue flames, as well as a barrier between Rin’s human and demonic halves. When drawn, the full extent of the uncontrollable blue flames emerges and reveals his association with Satan. Yet when kept in its sheath Rin can maintain the appearances of a typical human, give or take a few odd features.

Samples
First Person:

[It was an accidental video to be sure. There was no possible way that someone would willingly turn on a video to such an embarrassing moment. Yet the boy in the video seemed far too aware to have really realized the potential blackmail he had gotten himself into. So it had to have meant that the oh-so-adorable pink cake (complete with lace and all the wonderful trimming any little girl would coo over) he was decorating was meant to be seen. Then again, the real source of blackmail might not have been the cake (or the act of baking).

Maybe it was the matching apron.

With one last pink frosting flower, Rin stepped back from his creation and pulled the camera in close for it to see all of the detail.]

There! A cake like this won’t ever be seen again! It’s a work of edible art on its own.

[Someone is rather proud of himself…] …Does anyone want it? I really don’t need a cake like this. [Besides, he wants to have room to make another one. Or at least to try and make himself a good lunch. Cake wasn’t exactly lunch material.]

Third Person:

Rin walked the streets of Aliunde’s southeast district, looking for something familiar to catch his eye. He stuck his hands in his pockets and kept his head low. There were too many older people looking at him, making lewd calls about joining them in their version of fun. Rin wanted nothing to do with that. He was more interested in finding whichever place was blasting the music. He could feel the bass shaking the ground beneath him, making every step his took feel unbalanced. It shook him to his very core, making his heart beat fast in anticipation. Slowly he straightened his figure, walking with his head held high to get a better view of the neon colored world around him.

Though the music surrounded him on all side, getting far too loud for him to tell which direction it was coming from. He could have been walking in circles and he would have been none the wiser. The lights blared all around him in thousands of confusing and distorted colors. His head spun as he tried not to absorb all the sights and sounds at once, but it was too appealing to ignore.

It was amazing!

It was stupendous!

This was what adults did!

And he was so close to being an adult nowadays then he should be welcome here with open arms. This time he didn’t ignore the women calling out to him. He waved back, feeling braver thanks to their tittering and coy glances. It wasn’t until he collided into someone else did he realize he finally made it to his destination. That someone was a wall of hulking flesh, bearing down on him with a gaze of infinite discontent.

“What? I wasn’t doing anything bad!” Rin’s guilty face said otherwise. Besides, the man wasn’t willing to listen. If he wasn’t 17, then he wasn’t 17 and that was final - no matter how much Rin tried to convince him otherwise.
