It doesn't take much at all to fuel a rumor. My sophmore year in high school, I took 3 (male) dates to homecoming, all of whom were 19 or older, out of high school. (The eldest was my boyfriend.) They were allowed to cut it up and talk about anything they wanted with anyone, but none of them represented their relationships to me inaccurately.

The next week there were all sorts of totally untrue rumors going about school, including that one of them was my pimp, one was a congressman, that I had given blowjobs to the entire football team in the men's room (but not my dates!). . . I think it was just the threatening idea that a woman would bring three dates to a dance.

The sad thing is, none of them remembered to bring me a corsage.

But oh, it was fun. I always had someone to dance with.

haha thats wonderful. I love it. Thats a great plan; starting absurd rumors about yourself just to observe what people do with them. Unfortunately its not really necessary to start them yourself when you're on line all the time. The internet seems to allow high school to continue forever; immature, petty people with too much time on their hands can try to cause a lot of trouble for you even if you've never met them. Thats my experience anyway. Its evident this person knows nothing about me if they think that calling me a slut (i.e. 300 sexual partners) is an insult. That word was reclaimed long ago, its the beauty of being an evolved queer.
And you're right. It really isn't anyone's business unless I am planning on becoming intimate with them. :)

People who do drama want to get a response, it's very tempting to feed the beast sometimes. It's hard to figure out how to respond such that you're not just reacting, and it's hard to know when to walk away, and when to speak up with hopes that you'll take a hit only in terms of community standing for the short-term, but in the long run people will see that you were willing to call "bullshit" when you saw it, and that you did it in a way that avoided name-calling, with concern for the community's health as a whole. Hard stuff.
