My computer took a crap this weekend.  It won't recognize the hard drive.  It won't recognize the recovery discs because it won't recognize the hard drive.

This means I need, at the very least, a new hard drive, right?  This is a decent hand-me-down pc.  But, being inculcated by the disposable culture in which we live, I'm strongly contemplating ( Read more... )

For $500ish, you ought to be able to get a stupid-huge hard drive (I just paid $60 for a 250G at Microcenter, and that wasn't shopping around, that was an impulse buy) AND a cheap laptop.

If he's still there, there's a tiny korean man in a strip-mall about two blocks away from Tracey & my first apartment in Westmont. His name is Han. He no speaka de english real good, but his store is a treasure trove of computer shit awesomeness, he's friendly and honest (if not always easy to understand), and his prices are fair. Over the years, I think I've bought a half-dozen computers from him.

Hard drives are CHEAP these days. For instance, a 750GB hard drive, if you look around, will cost you between $110 and $160. In fact, here's one that you can buy online for $109 ( ... )

it's an older computer, like 4 or 5 years (terrible to say), and since it's a hand-me-down, i don't have any of the software. so, i'm thinking, laptop with docking station. The monitor, keyboard, mouse, and 3-in-1 I have are all fine. I'd love to pick your brain some more, so i'll give you a call, but probably not until tomorrow. Thanks!

i don't have any real recommendations. i bet you can get a decent used laptop off ebay or craigslist, tho. you might even try freecycle, although you have to keep your expectations realistic as far as that's concerned.

i'm feeling untrusting at the moment. i may, in despair, turn to unaccountable individuals in far away places, but right now, i'm looking at retailers. i hope that doesn't sound harsh--i think it could. for tone, think--skeptical.

I have viseral dislike of Best Buy. I can't remember why... If they have the best deal, I'll just have to overcome it, I guess.

Thanks for the recommendation. :)
