last night dave and i went to buy carpet for the basement. now that we have carpet i need ideas for the rest of the place like the walls, sofas, etc. i want the basement to be like an old hollywood theater...old hollywood glam...40's style..something like that. so if anyone has any ideas about color, texture, where to buy cheap retro like stuff ( Read more... )

what colour is the carpet? The coolest thing i have seen lately, which i think would tie in really well with the old hollywood theatre idea, is a nice deep maroon colour on the walls - but done in a suede style. Its really simple to do and doesn't take any longer than painting 2 normal coats on the walls. The end effect is pretty cool, i have some books at work that explain how to do it in a simple way, so next time im in i'll grab some copies for you :)

the carpet is a cream burber (did i spell that right?) with a diamond kind of pattern on it. the suede effect is a great idea! i did find this great color is a very dark red almost purple color which i think will work well...just need to find a trim color! thanks girl!

I agree with mac. Maroon all the way! Rich velvet fabrics, gold or brass accents. You know, you could always search for cheaper furniture at salvage places and then reupholster it. Try Art.com for ideas on prints (they have a very big selection) and try Frames.com for reasonably-priced custom frames (if you can't find the right ones anywhere else). Think lavish!

Good luck! Oh, and post pics during your process. I'd love to see what you guys come up with. :)

oohh! If you are going for the old 40's style, you don't even have to go to the expense of paying someone else to reupholster...if you can find some beautiful velvet fabric, you can just drape and tuck it over the furniture (kind of like a couch cover i guess) and then tie it in the back....but then have the back against the wall. Easy, little outlay in the beginning, but this allows you to get the room setup and then over time you can have the furniture done professionally :) At least this way you don't have to wait to save up the money (i have no patience for that) ;)

Very true, an idea I didn't think of. :)

If I think back to old movies (or '40s period current movies), the upscale furniture of the time kind of looked like clam shells (or had that design). Know what I mean? Tailored upholstery that was stuffed in sections to make it look like an open shell. Wouldn't it be great if she could find something like that in this area? Unfortunately, most of that stuff (whether it's in good shape or not) is outrageously priced. She needs to have Trading Spaces renovate for her (and fund it). :)

I saw some phat shit on Changing Rooms where they got pictures of hollywood stars from that era, printed them on on that clear plastic stuff they use for overheads, then attached them to black frames w/ small votives or tea lights behind them... the result is they look somewhat like strips of film... very cool. Do you plan to move all of your AV stuff down there?

It has been a long weekend... a long weekend of going back and forth between changing rooms, trading spaces, and while you were out...
