You know, another thought that just occured to me about a potential reason for disliking some aspect of H/G in HBP is that I think JKR understood the fear that a romance could overshadow the trio and found a way to forecast to us that she was not going to let that happen: Ginny has scenes of pretty strong conflict with both the characters of Ron and Hermione in HBP.
In a way, Harry committing to Ginny would inevitably change some dynamics and the role of Ron and Hermione in Harry's life but that could NOT happen until a) he'd grown up and b) he'd defeated Voldemort.

That is a very interesting observation. I wish she had talked more about Ginny in the chat and went into why she wrote her as she did.
There's an interesting tension between Ginny-as-fourth-trio-member and Ginny-as-just-Harry's that was introduced as early as Book 3 when Ron told Ginny to get lost on the train. I've never had problems with Harry having an out-of-trio romantic relationship, any more than I had problems with him having a special relationship with people like Dumbledore, Lupin, or Dobby that the other two didn't share. Since he's the protagonist, that can be easily and naturally done.
The interesting thing, though, is that Ginny was always given ties to Ron and Hermione - close ties of blood and friendship. These were briefly "used" at the end of HBP when the four of them "were spending all of their time together" but I think it's real purpose was to set us up for Harry "second life," as Anne puts it, and the epilogue. We don't have to have it explained to us how the two couples are going to get along and maintain close ties, because it's obvious.
It's an interesting choice, because Ginny could have joined the trio at any time past Book 2. It's

Thank goodness he did! All trio, all the time might've gotten boring.
how could Harry be miserable if Ginny was around? And it's very important that Harry spend lots of time wallowing in misery!
Yes. Can't let poor Harry get too comfortable - got to keep that plot moving along. And I believe JKR made a conscious decision to not introduce any internal H/G conflicts in order to make it the most ideal future. He had enough conflicts in his youth to last a lifetime. He doesn't need any in his "second life".
And then, obviously, how could Harry be miserable if Ginny was around? And it's very important that Harry spend lots of time wallowing in misery!
Exactly! A happy Harry does not mesh well with a world that still has Ol' Moldyshorts running loose. But a Harry staring longingly at Ginny's dot on the Marauder's Map adds to the misery of the Horcrux Hunt and living in a tent cut off from the world.
Harry and Ginny are my OTP, and I find myself very fascinated by their relationship. I've also been addicted to fanfic since DH came out, and I haven't been for ages. I certainly wasn't as interested in fic after HBP, although I did read some, but right now I feel like I can't get enough, much like you!
I think Jo handled the H/G relationship perfectly in DH. I've always felt that DH was going to focus heavily on the trio (as it should), and that H/G would be more in the background. Which is what happened. I was pleased to see that Harry's feelings, however, were extremely present during the horcrux hunt, even more than I expected them to be. So H/G was still a strong presence, especially for Harry, but it did not overrule the trio friendship, which is, IMO, the heart of the novels. I think Jo handled it all very well, and it just makes me happy trying to fill in the blanks with fic.
This really has nothing to do with your post but ... I just noticed what you changed the name of your journal too (baby making machine) and I am dying. Too funneh. :D

Oh! Forgot to add, if you have any post-DH fic you want to recommend, please do!
Do you want genfic, too? If you're not already following fernwithy's Teddy Lupin and the Forest Gaurd, you should be. :)
