since i know very little about computers, and have spent way too much time wrestling with this one recently, i have a little question

Actually, it sounds like the computer is overheating. try to clean out the vents.

just to clarify, i mean it's tired and slow like, the next morning, not immediately after, but always more problematic after movies have happened. but it is now sitting on a baking cooling rack so it has more room for the vents to blow...
