rubynye is not on my flist, but I thought I would contribute to the "hobbit pile" anyway. Perhaps one of you who is on her flist could let her know it's here? Thank you!
Frodo Gamgee knew his first mistake was lying on his back by the parlour hearth to read his book. His second mistake was leaving the parlour door ajar when his younger siblings were in the vicinity and in a mood to play. The book was just inches from his nose and he never saw Bilbo’s stealthy approach.
“OOF!” Frodo gasped as a small bottom plumped unceremoniously on his stomach, a connection made more painful because the family had just finished luncheon twenty minutes earlier.
Grinning, Bilbo continued bouncing as he chanted, “Play pony with me, Frodo, play pony!”
“You’re on the- oof!- wrong side to-oof!- play pony,” Frodo protested, placing his hands on his little brother’s hips in an attempt to stop the bouncing. “Just give me a chance to-“
“I wanna play pony too!” Daisy squealed from the doorway, and she promptly straddled Frodo’s stomach as well. Her cries of delight quickly brought Primrose, who clapped her hands and plopped herself behind her sister.
“Now, just a moment, I can’t possibly carry all of you at once,” Frodo grunted, “and please stop bouncing before…”
His eyes widened when Merry and Pippin appeared on the scene. “Do not you even think of it,” he warned when he saw their eyes alight with mischief. “You both are too old to-“
“You take his shoulders!” Merry ordered, “and I’ll take his feet!”
The subsequent clamor brought Rosie to the doorway, Robin perched on her hip. The lad began wriggling furiously, wanting to join the pile of arms, legs and curly hair that was his older siblings. From somewhere underneath the pile, Frodo’s muffled voice pleaded for mercy. He managed to get his head clear from under Pippin’s chest, and he looked up at his mother, who was smiling.
“Oh, Mum, you wouldn’t,” Frodo said weakly.
She set Robin down and he excitedly launched himself into the fray.
“Just mind you don’t knock over the side table,” Rosie said, and with a chuckle left the happy loving tangle of children to their fun.
