I think the problem may lie more with how everyone has such high hopes. It's the nature of this country that not everything will get done because not everyone will agree on what should be done. I think that's what worries me, that people will be so disappointed and wrongly blame him for not doing 'everything' when that is of course impossible. I think that it's not his fault per se for the scorn when people have such high hopes.
I'm not scared of him. There are ways to deal with that sort of thing and even if he fails, we were already failing to begin with. If anything, I think he has a good chance of doing a lot of good even with the odds in a country like ours.
And I think that his promise of change has been illustrated by some of the things he wants to do. It's not a general thing in my mind. Doing of course is another thing entirely, but he's only been in office a few days...
Again, true, but my thing is power corrupts. No man was ever meant to hold such power. Not matter how pure and clean he is.
To be honest, it'll take him four years to turn the country around. That's all he's focused on doing. If he's re-elected then he'll really give us the 'change' and 'hope' he promised.
But I dunno, maybe part of my fear stems from my parents distrust and paranoia. (My mother is convinced that America will be handed to the gehttos of the lower class black people)
"I mean, he quite literally rules the world." I do beg to differ... well... maybe not differ, per say, but protest at the phrasing. It is terribly arrogant. Although (as I said) America is basically the sole superpower, it does not rule the world. Thus, the President doesn't either.
Sorry. ^^ I was watching the inaugeral parade, and something they said (about Washington DC being the 'capital of the world') just bugged me to no end. Had to get that out - it really bothers me.
You're looking at the literal meaning. You yourself said America held so much influence. That's where most of that power comes from. Whatever happens to America the world will follow suit. (Except of course Canada because, they're in their own little world ^^)
Hehe...have you ever been there? It sure as hell feels like it, ya'know?
Yeah, I know, I sound like a horrible hypocrite. But its hard to explain - yeah, America is the big guy in world politics and heck, even world culture, but they still don't "rule" the world, technically. And its that technicality that I (and perhaps others) are sensitive too. The only reason America does affect the world so much is because they are such a giant. But even then, individual, sovereign countries still go their own way, much of the time.
I guess it comes from being Canadian - always sensitive to anything American that might be infringing on our own sovereignty.
Oh, I expect it does. ^^ But London probably feels that way to an Englishman, and Ottawa might even feel that way to me. But when it comes to 'world cities', it is cities like London, New York, Madrid, Hong Kong... etc, that really are.
