Any Other History Points: Before becoming a pirate, Jack worked for the East India Trading Company, under Cutler Beckett. He already had the Pearl, and his job was transporting slaves via sea. He didn’t know that, however, but when he found out he was trading slaves, he rebelled against Beckett. Beckett replied to his rebellion by burning down the Pearl and imprisoning Jack. Before imprisoning him, Beckett marked him with a P on his arm. Jack, however, not only managed to escape, but he marked Beckett (probably while he was sleeping) with the same P on his arm.
That’s probably when he became a pirate and made an agreement with Davy Jones, who brought Jack’s Pearl back from the depths of the sea. They agreed that Jack would have commandeered the ship for thirteen years, and then he would have to join Davy Jones’ crew and work for him for eternity. Jack, however, never kept his promise.
He has a special compass. Many say it’s broken because it does not point to North, but Jack knows very well how to use it. The compass points in the direction of the thing that is most wanted by the one person who is holding the compass. Jack used his compass to find Davy Jones’ heart and also the Fountain of Youth. It’s unknown how Jack obtained it. He still keeps the magical charts he has stolen from Barbossa with him.
Also, his adolescent years are a mystery. His mother is dead, although it’s unknown when she died. His father is Captain Teague, the Keeper of the Pirate Code. Jack is also part of the Brethren Court and he’s the Pirate Lord of the Caribbean.
Personality: Jack Sparrow is a very ambiguous character. He doesn’t really fit into the figure of the hero, but he’s not that bad, either. Most of the time, he tricks people (friends or foes, it doesn’t matter) in order to achieve his goal (for example, he left Will on the Flying Dutchman and then he lied to Elizabeth and used her to find Davy Jones’ heart). However, sometimes Jack has those ‘hero moments’ where he does the right thing and saves the ones close to him (for example, he made Will stab Davy Jones’ heart because he was dying and Jack put aside all his plans to become immortal to save his friend).
He’s very ambitious and it’s shown by his continuously seeking immortality. He couldn’t become captain of the Flying Dutchman, and so he went on a journey to find the Fountain of Youth.
He prefers to negotiate instead of fighting (as he himself said, “Why fight when you can negotiate?”).
He and Barbossa are rivals and they usually fight over the Pearl. Jack is also a little childish when it comes to Barbossa - he’d do anything just to show he’s better than him.
He loves rum and always complains when it’s finished. He enjoys flirting with women and always tends to confuse people by repeating the same word three or more times in one sentence. He always reminds people that he’s Captain Jack Sparrow and he says “savvy?” whenever he wants to make something clear. Another word he says a lot is “bugger”, especially when he’s in trouble.
Although it may seem that Jack has no moral values whatsoever, he actually believes that freedom is one of the most important things in this world, and that no man should be deprived of it. He likes being a pirate because of his freedom (he once said that the Pearl was not just a ship - it was freedom).
