Hey, thanks for staying with this!

I know, poor Dean, it's angst-o-rama! (but he's so cuddly and smishable when he's hurting!) (Um, I think that makes me evil)

But this fic, like about 99.9% of fanfictions, had absolutely nothing to do with angst. You see, most people think that angst means sorrow or depression, but it really means nothing of the kind. It's derived from the Middle High German word "angest," which meant fear. Nowadays, it's a philosophy term for when a person is anxious about being in control of their own destiny, or is afraid of the concept of existential freedom.

I think fandoms, or at least fan fiction sectors of fandoms are evolving a new meaning for the word.

It'll be the new 'awesome' (never means terribly frightening any more)

And Then You said

You do have a point
I mean, nowadays, who is really going to know enough about philosophy to have REAL angst? And with the prevailing attitude of the times, who is really gonna find self-determination scary?

(Sorry I had to delete my comment, re-reading it I thought it could be miscontrued. And in deleting it, your subcomment was deleted as well. )

Yep, I actually minored in philosophy and I don't think I could dredge up a good definition of existential freedom that could be commonly understood.

But language is supposed to change and evolve, so this one doesn't bother me.

I adore this series, I can't even tell you how much. It seems so believable...and in some ways, superior to the actual show (I was not a faithful watcher past mid-S2, due to a large extent what I felt was the absolute BETRAYAL of Dean's character, which just got worse by the season). I love how Luke is with Dean...exactly the kind of surrogate father I'd expect him to be. And I love how Dean is with him...I can feel the underlying want, NEED to be close, and yet the fear that, not only is it not his place but that Luke could be ripped from him as easily as his first family was.

Of all the fics in this 'verse, though, this one is my favorite. Dean's heartbreaking rant at the end about his bike just breaks me, and I've read this several times. :) Luke does the right thing, in every way...though I can't lie and say I wouldn't love to read more angst!

Thanks for sharing this!!

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to leave such a lovely comment!

Though this verse was inspired by the scene in Season 4 when Luke puts Dean to bed on the night before his wedding,I usually watch season one eps when I am writing in this verse. That is the cool, self-assured, intelligent, responsible, dependable, confident kid I am writing about.

Every time I watch a scene of Luke with Rory or Jess I think what a paternal person he is and what a great father he would be!

I always felt that Dean and Luke would get along great! They have a lot in common. They both like sports, fix their own cars, and were easily roped into doing chores for Lorelai! They're both good guys who are hard-working and treat others well. Dean would have responded the way Luke wanted him to if he had been in Jess' place.

I can feel the underlying want, NEED to be close, and yet the fear that, not only is it not his place but that Luke could be ripped from him as easily as his first family was.Wow, that is EXACTLY what I'm trying to ( ... )
