Fuel pumps

So anyone know how to check the fuel pump on a car? I am suspecting that might be the issue with the van. It starts but I have to keep giving it gas or else it dies. It did it even plugged into the 50 amp car starter I have and the battery checked out fine.

On most cars if it is quiet enough you can hear the fuel pump in your tank from the drivers seat. When the ignition is placed in the run position. If you can not hear anything try putting your ear over the fuel filler when the ignition is turned to the run position. If you do not hear it. Check all the fuses. Most cars have fuses under the hood as well as under the dash. If all that fails and you are handy with tools unscrew the fuel line at the closest point to the tank. With a bucket handy turn the ignition to the run position. If no fuel comes out you probably have a bad fuel pump.

Now replacing the pump in the fuel tank can get expensive. Their are alternatives. Some in tank fuel pumps allow fuel to be drawn through them. So an inline fuel pump can be installed somewhere in the system. Which can be a massive savings.

I just recently replaced the in tank pump in my truck. Fun job.

That in tank pump will stop pumping when it detects full pressure in the line. So you will only hear the pump for about five seconds once the the ignition is placed in the run position.
