Related to #1 -- a REALLY helpful hint that both motivates me and helps me put things away better:
This is directly from Clean Sweep: Move everything that you possibly can from the space you're working on into another room or (preferably) outside. It helps you to get a good look at everything, and helps to visually plan what to get rid of, etc. Then move it back, according to whatever plan you work out.
I know this doesn't solve the whole problem, but it *does* help. It's like the old "emptying your desk on the floor" technique -- if you get it out, you have to move it back. It just helps me to visualize what exactly is in a room (and has a tendency to hide under the bed, etc).
