CHARACTER
NAME: Naoto Shirogane
AGE: Sixteen
FANDOM/MEDIUM: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, Video Game for the PS2
CANON PULL-POINT: True Ending. Max social link (Friends Route)

ABILITIES: Sharpshooter, detective, good with repairing and handling anything mechanical. Also, she's able to summon a persona named Yamato-Takeru. With Yamato, she has an array of deadly physical attacks, instant KO light and dark attacks, and the unavoidable almighty spells rarely handed out in Persona.

CHARACTER BACKGROUND: The only successor from a lineage of famous detectives, Naoto Shirogane is a strange, almost robotic character who seeks to take her father's place as Shirogane the V. The reason behind this is she dearly loved her parents and admired their work, but unfortunately, both were killed in an accident and left Naoto to be raised by her grandfather. While she continued to strive towards this goal, Naoto lost her sense of self due to isolation by both kids her age and adults as well as lack of female role models. In response, she began to look down on students her age and dressing like a boy to at least be accepted as a male rather than female by the police departments she would often be hired by.

In Persona 4, Naoto does not arrive in Inaba until May, hired by the Inaba PD to get to the bottom of a string of murder cases that have left their normal detectives stumped. She continues to cooperate with them until August when Mitsuo Kubo, a kid suspected of being the murderer, is apprehended. Naoto does not believe Mitsuo is the correct culprit, but in their desire to end the case, the department dismisses her, leaving her vehement and determined to prove them wrong. She decides to use the true murderer's modus operandi in order to prove her case. Her trap is successful and she ends up being kidnapped by the killer and, unexpectedly, thrown inside the Midnight Channel. In this new world, Naoto bides her time with her Shadow Self, waiting for the Investigation Team to come and rescue her, but this ends up backfiring upon her once they arrive.

(The Investigation Team: A group of Persona-users lead by the Protagonist. Members consist of Yosuke Hanamura, Chie Satonaka, Yukiko Amagi, Kanji Tatsumi, Rise Kujikawa, and Teddie/Kuma. They're attempting to solve the murders as well, saving people who have been kidnapped from the Shadows inside the Television world.

Shadows: Physical manifestations of negative emotions. Shadows gain strength as more emotions circulate which can cause them to be very dangerous. Only Persona-Users have been known to be capable of defeating them)

Shadow Naoto reveals the truth about Naoto to the Team; how she wanted to be an adult, desiring to be useful, and accepted which only seems possible if she's male instead of female (yes, up until this point, everyone had assumed she was a guy. Her disguise is very convincing). Naoto denies her Shadow which causes it to go berserk and attack the Investigation Team. Fortunately, they're able to defeat Shadow Naoto and Naoto finally accepts this dangerous aspect of herself, gaining her Persona Sukuna-Hikona. From October on, she joins the Investigation Team, getting the ball rolling towards the end, assisting in the capture of Taro Namatame, Tohru Adachi, and finally, the defeat of Izanami-no-Okami, the mastermind behind the Midnight Channel and its foggy condition.

There's a side quest (sorta) that can be completed in order to get to know Naoto better called a Social Link. In it, the Protagonist assists Naoto with a small caper revealed to be arranged by her Grandfather. The ploy has the family assistant/secretary Yakushiji pretend there's a break-in at the Shirogane Estate. Six items precious to Naoto have been taken by the thief only known as the Phantom Thief X. Over the course of the Social Link, together they retrieve the six items, all of which turn out to be detective tools Naoto made when she was just a child. It reminds her just how passionate she was about becoming a detective, that her gender and her age were never anything to be concerned about. As long as she wants to be a detective, she can become one. With her resolve strengthened, her Social Link allows her Persona to ascend and evolve into Yamato-Takeru.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Independent, silent, fierce besides her small stature, Naoto is a serious character who can be cold and calculating. The moment she arrives in Inaba, she already knows that each person who has turned up dead has appeared on the media (usually the TV) before their kidnapping occurs and refuses the idea of having 'fun'. Fun and friends are only seen as baggage to her until, of course, she's saved after being kidnapped on purpose.

In truth, Naoto is insecure about being accepted how she is. She's still young; detectives aren't kids. She's a girl; her ideal detective is male. While originally being suspicious of the Protagonist and the others in the Investigation Team, she's surprised to be accepted by them right after being rescued. Her motivations stem from social injustices as well and she wants to prove that, even though she's female, she can live up to being the 5th in the line of Shirogane.

Getting through to her is a challenge. Being independent, she'll try handling everything on her own instead of with help. She doesn't want to appear weak. Until you get through to her genuinely, she'll be politely distant, using honorifics (mainly -san) with certain individuals she has just met (of course, this continues with others that she's close to, but for other reasons) and keeping her gender a secret (this includes her using masculine pronouns and continuing with her usual male attire). If you can get to her, she can lighten up, smile, and be a great asset to any situation so long as you don't cross her. If her methods are judged, she can be cross and as long as she has ammo, you might be gambling your life.

WORLD: In the world of Persona 4, there's the small, rural city of Inaba and the mysterious world inside the TV referred to as the Midnight Channel. The Midnight Channel cannot be entered unless one has a Persona which is only gained after accepting ones 'Shadow Self'. The 'Shadow Self' is a physical manifestation of a person's fears, desires, or thoughts rejected and wishing to be known. A Persona, therefore, is the accepted emotions that can be manifested into physical form IE it's a reflection of their soul. In Inaba, however, someone is abusing the power of Persona and purposely throwing people into the TV only for them to appear after a foggy night, dead and draped across telephone poles, satellites, etc. When the crime goes unsolved for too long, Naoto is signed onto the case.

In the story line, Naoto doesn't join the party until early October with her Persona, Sukuna-Hikona, the tiny Japanese God of Medicine. After maxing out her Social Link, her persona becomes Yamato-Takeru, the Legendary Japanese Prince who wielded Kusanagi.

OCCUPATION: You could probably sign her up as a blacksmith, wainwright, or gunsmith.

SAMPLES
THIRD PERSON: With the sun beating high overhead, Naoto examined what meager rations remained. Shifting her hat, quietly she considers what must be done in order for everyone to make it. She reaches into her pocket and clicks the revolver chambers open, slipping new bullets in. With a flick, it snaps shut. It's locked and loaded. It wasn't her job to hunt nor her place to just decide to wander off, but if the supplies ran out, they wouldn't be able to make it to Oregon unless they planned to do trade with another wagon. Yet, even if they did, they had little to trade. They could probably due without the ridiculous amounts of hats and bonnets; it wasn't like she was planning to use either of the items soon.

"I'll be back," she called back before leaping out of the wagon. She wouldn't go too far to lose sight of the train, but it had to be far enough where game could be found. An abrupt flap of wings and she turned, raising the gun, safety off, trigger pulled, and fired. She lowered the smoking revolver and stared at the bird before locking another bullet into the chamber. What else was there...?

FIRST PERSON:
Today, I find myself waking up in a rustic town in confusion. I don't understand how or why exactly I've been brought here; however, from the information I've gathered, it's the 17th Century and the location is America. There are shouts about the town and wagon, talk about heading to Oregon. If that's correct, then... are we on the Oregon Trail?

... Wait, now that I can recall... Wasn't I here before??

No, I must be imagining things. It isn't possible to be here before and return. Perhaps I've been working too hard... I should try requesting a short vacation.

NOTES: She refuses to wear dresses... and bonnets... unless someone can convince her otherwise for a second. Also, it's fan speculation that Naoto has a large or the largest bust size in the game, but binds herself down using a sarashi, or chest wrappings.
