the only jobs i can find are for charity canvassers - you know those people you swiftly walk past or avoid by going up another street. that seems to be the only option at the moment. have applied to two part time shoe shops, thought about tutoring, teaching english, flower arranging and indian head massage. all in a vain attempt to figure out how

Well done on the results though. And don't worry about the driving - honestly, NOBODY is a confident driver by the time they get their licence. I mean, when I got mine in 1998 (dear me, how long ago that seems) I'd only had my 15 lessons or so plus a few drives with the parents on my learner's licence. It's only when you start driving on your own that you become a proper driver. I think you'll be a good driver based on your common sense and general awesomeness. ;)
