I can remember 2 occasions of 'wallet' misplacement
once, for some reason, I placed it on the roof of the car in my driveway...then drove off -- another time, I left it on a motel check-in counter -- was lucky and got it back in both cases

Yeah, its a good thing most people are honest and return your stuff. My wallet was in our hostel room, so no worries!
