School Update

Martin was still a little unconvinced about the school I had raved about for so long.  Although not mentioned in the previous post, this particular school is one that excited me not long after Johnna came to live with us, but without child support the tuition was prohibitive

How cool is that? Is it a charter sort of school?

No, it's a private school with a very different approach to education. We're hoping this works for her as the public schools refused to see she was struggling.

I definitely do like the open approach to the open grading style of educating. I'm an educator (speech/language pathologist), and when our school was looking for a Reading curriculum, one of them was a "level" based approach. A few of us were on board with that, but the majority were not. Oh well...

That said, not all of public education is as you've unfortunately experienced. I attend sooo many student referral meetings, where our teachers are almost over-protectively concerned about their students' weaknesses. It's a good thing. But we're Small Town, USA.

I sooo hope that your daughter will blossom at her new school! I look forward to keeping up with her year.

How interesting you're in this field. Your comments do much to assuage remaining doubts we might have had about this educational approach.

Johnna is our granddaughter. We've come into her life only lately, and knowing what's best for her is always a challenge.

I do understand there are some good public schools out there - outside Georgia. The school she attended last year was one of those, but when they failed to address our concerns, based primarily on her classroom conduct, that was pretty much the last straw. All my sons (now grown) attended this same school district, creating a history reaching back into the 1980's. None of that history has been positive

Another interesting feature is the children help set the curriculum.

A very good idea; ensures interest!

Excellent observation. Ensures interests as long as the child is interested in the subject. But who even among adults could resist learning everything about helicoptors, or police stations, spacecraft, whatever! given the integrated approach.

Only wish there were schools like this back in the stone ages when I attended. It does sound like way too much fun.
