Summary: B.A.P. tries to set Hyosung and Himchan up while missing something Very Important.
Hyosung thinks nothing of it when Daehyun accidentally knocks her into Himchan. Himchan’s arms instantly fly around her waist, like he’s a pro at catching her.
“Sorry Noona!” Daehyun brings his palms together, grinning as he weaves through the group, past a sleepy Jongup and blinking Zelo. Then he’s gone, leaving nothing but a trail of laughter in his wake. It makes Hyosung feel younger, excitement bubbling in the pit of her stomach. It makes her want to do reckless things like hold Himchan’s hand.
“It’s those shoes,” Himchan says as they cram into the elevator. He kicks lightly at the heel of her stilettos. She dodges his foot with ease, stepping lightly on his right foot. Their mini match ends when Jongup accidentally trips over Hyosung’s leg in his sleepwalking state. Then Himchan is whisking Jongup in the direction of the exit towards B.A.P.s van as he waves goodbye.
“Come on,” Jieun says, nudging Hyosung in the direction of their own van.
In Singapore, Himchan grabs her hand and drags her into the water. She yelps and tries to push him down, but he’s strong. Hyosung relents when Sunhwa and Zinger start splashing water at her too. Traitors, she thinks as the cameraman zooms in on them. Daehyun and Youngjae come to her rescue, attacking from both sides as they successfully shoves Himchan into an incoming wave. Himchan falls into the water while everyone laughs.
“Yah! Kim Himchan!” Hyosung shrieks when Himchan emerges from the water, completely drenched. Daehyun and Youngjae have already hightailed from the scene of the crime, so Himchan comes after her as they reenact a ridiculous game of cat and mouse around the beach.
Later, when she’s drying her hair with a towel, Jongup appears out of nowhere and takes a seat next to her. “That was fun,” he sighs contently, watching Yongguk change his shirt. Yongguk, too, had fallen causality to Daehyun and Youngjae.
“You have sand on your face,” she says, rubbing circles on Jongup’s cheek. Jongup smiles at her, his eyes folding up into a crescent shape. He hums like a purring puppy, and she resist the urge to ruffle his hair.
“You really get along with Hyung, Noona.” Jongup peers up at her. It’s not a question but a statement, and Hyosung doesn’t even bother asking which Hyung he’s referring to. Instead, Jongup jumps up when someone calls his name.
Zinger comes over with another towel. They watch Jongup follow Himchan around the beach happily. “A total puppy,” Zinger agrees, and they burst into a giggling fit.
She finds Zelo in the hallway one day, attempting to balance an armful of canned drinks as he navigates away from the vending machine. Zelo is too shy to ask, but Hyosung scoops cans out of his arms and helps him anyways.
“Thanks.” He smiles lopsidedly, towering over her as they walk to B.A.P.’s rehearsal room. Zelo’s hair is a shade darker today, the end of his fringes wet with sweat. Hyosung is no better, clad in a large hoodie with her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. She thinks about their mean choreographer and how long she can stretch a ten minute break.
Jongup and Daehyun cheer when they enter the room. Yongguk doesn’t express his excitement as loudly, but gives Hyosung a gum baring smile when she hands him a drink.
“Give that to Himchan-hyung?” Zelo asks, nodding at the corner of the room where Himchan is still practicing a move.
Himchan doesn’t stop when he spots her approaching in the mirror. He does, however, spin towards her with a flare and bows when she claps. “You’re too kind,” he says before accepting the drink. He snaps it open and offers her the first sip.
They sit side by side on the floor and watch Youngjae lie back flat against the hardwood. “Rough practice?” She asks, watching Himchan push his bangs back.
He turns to her. “Shouldn’t you be practicing too?” Himchan asks, his voice deep and his breath warm on her shoulder. In the end, he laughs when she snatches the juice out of his grasp, his free hand landing on her back as he pushes her gently towards the door. “You can have it.”
In the hallway, she drinks the rest of the can and tastes Himchan.
The stylist has just finished curling Hyosung’s hair when Hyosung’s phone beeps. She scrolls through messages from her mother to find that Youngjae has made the next move in their puzzle game. She grins upon spotting the winning combination, locking the puzzle and effectively beating Youngjae. “Who’s the brainiac now?” She mumbles under her breath, sending him several victory emoticons.
“I don’t see how you’re so good at that game,” Jieun says as another stylist combs through her bangs.
“It’s one of my many talents,” Hyosung chirps. You lost again, she texts Younjae. Bring me food, Dongsaeng.
B.A.P. isn’t schedule to perform for another hour, but Hyosung is still surprised when Himchan comes through the door of their waiting room with a plastic bag full of snacks. “Youngjae is getting his makeup done,” Himchan explains as he throws a pack of yakult at her. “Plus, I lost at kawaibawibo.”
When Hyosung pushes a bottle towards Himchan, he sticks a straw through it and hands it back. He moves around the room, suavely offering a drink to her band mates. Himchan chuckles when Sunhwa teases him about wearing more eyeliner than her.
“Youngjae says he stole this from Daehyun,” Himchan explain, pulling a sandwich out of the bag. When Hyosung hesitates, he breaks it and offers her half.
They toast with Daehyun’s sandwich. Sunhwa comes over and steals a bite when Hyosung challenges Himchan to a tapping game on her phone. Sunhwa pushes their heads together and laughs when they yelp. No one pays them any attention as Hyosung attempts to fix Himchan’s hair while he moves stray bangs out of her eyes.
Next to them, Jieun just tsks knowingly.
After Himchan leaves, Zinger props one arm over Hyosung’s shoulder and says, “Why don’t you just date already?”
Hyosung doesn’t bother replying.
She really regrets not telling Zinger the truth later, when their van flips on the way to their next appointment. Zinger is the only one who doesn’t stir when their vehicle comes to an alarming halt.
Hyosung is bent over Zinger’s hospital bed when Himchan shows up, a warm hand settling on the small of her back as he helps her stand up. His grip is light as he maneuvers her away from an unconscious Zinger. Jieun and Sunhwa are in the other room with their family. When Hyosung looks around, she finds Yongguk standing guard at the doorway, looking concerned.
“We took a cab,” Himchan explains. “The others wanted to come, but it was too late.”
It’s good because if Jongup or Zelo had shown up, looking incredibly lost at her, Hyosung really would have cried. They’re just kids, she thinks. Sometimes she feels like a kid too. The feeling is painfully strong when she tries too hard. Those are the moments when Himchan just smiles kindly at her-backstage at their hosting gig, during joint rehearsal practice, and across the waiting room when she just wants to shrink away.
“I think your mother is coming,” Himchan says, his voice smooth and comforting as she buries her face into his arm. Himchan sighs and draws soothing circles on her back.
By the time Hyosung looks up, Yongguk is already gone. When Hyosung glances up at Himchan, he gives her a small shrug. Yongguk probably always knew anyways.
Two days later they’re in the elevator together after hearing about Zinger’s prognosis. This time, Himchan pulls Hyosung close and kisses her. His fingers cup her face as her hands loop around his neck.
“She’s awake,” Hyosung says after they pull apart, her face flushing. “I’m going to tell her the truth.”
“Good.” Himchan smirks. “Maybe now everyone will stop trying to set us up.”
Hyosung finally slips her hand into his. “Well, they were kind of on the right track.”
Zinger yelps when she hears the news, but then goes into a coughing fit. Youngjae is so shocked that he almost forgets to give her the glass of water in his hand. Zelo comes to the rescue and helps Zinger sit upright. “Why is this coming out when I’m bed ridden?” Zinger wheezes. “When I can’t smack you for keeping it hidden?”
Hyosung shrinks a little. “I’m sorry.”
“I’m not sorry we’re together,” Himchan says, one arm around Hyosung’s waist.
Jieun and Sunhwa giggle, Daehyun pretends to be nauseous, and Jongup just looks between Himchan and Hyosung happily with stars in his eyes.
Yongguk shuffles over from fixing the flowers in Zinger’s vase. He gives them a nervous laugh. “I was worried because it was getting to my turn to be sent on a matchmaker mission.”
Jieun and Sunhwa go home for the week. Hyosung wakes up a few days later to find Himchan sitting by the foot of her bed, watching her sleep.
“Yah! Kim Himchan!” She hisses, pulling her comforter over to hide her morning face. “What if my mother came to visit again today?”
“I checked to make sure she wouldn’t be here,” Himchan says, moving the bedding away from Hyosung. When she finally emerges, he grabs her hand. He’s silent for a moment. “You know, I was really worried about everyone, but especially you.”
“I’m fine,” she says, bringing his hand to her face and sighing.
“I just thought it would be terrible if something happened to you, and I didn’t even tell everyone how much I care about you.”
Hyosung opens her eyes. “How much do you care about me?” She teases.
Himchan grins. “Enough to come to your rescue every time. Enough to want to hear you yell my name every day. Enough to tell everyone in the world that you’re my ideal type.”
“You’re not romantic,” she says, stopping only when he kisses her.
Weeks later, when they learn the choreography to Crash, Himchan picks her up by the waist and spins her around the practice room. Jieun are Youngjae are jumping around while Sunhwa sings the chorus. No one is really listening though, until Daehyun shrieks “yah!”
Suddenly everyone is screaming “Kim! Him! Chan!” in a surprisingly accurate impersonation of Hyosung.
Hyosung laughs so hard that Himchan has to pull her into a hug to stop her from crying.
