Youngjae wouldn't call this fighting, per say, but that's because Daehyun wouldn't recognize a fight if Youngjae physically hit him over the head. Five months of dating Jung Daehyun has crafted Youngjae into a thoughtful and patient man, or so he'd like to think. This is why Youngjae is one second away from wringing Daehyun's head off upon arriving at his house for dinner.
Daehyun never told him he lived in a fucking estate. With a doorman.
It started when Youngjae noticed the ring on Daehyun's finger. "It's a family heirloom," Daehyun had explains over lunch, sticking a fry in Youngjae's mouth. In the months they spent together -- holding hands on campus, going to the park on weekends, sleeping in on Sundays --, Youngjae had never questioned Daehyun until he spotted an identical ring on someone else.
Youngjae was never into couple accessories, but his suspicion had gotten the best of him until Daehyun explained, "Jonggupie is a cousin! Of course we have the same family crest on our ring!" Then he proceeded to fit himself between Youngjae and the sofa cushion, his attention back on the movie.
Later that night, Youngjae examined the ring while Daehyun slept. He untangled his fingers from Daehyun's and slowly slipped the ring off Daehyun's hand, examining it in the darkness of the room. He went off to pick up breakfast the next morning, returning to find a fuming Daehyun wearing bed sheets for clothes. "Where is my ring?" Daehyun hissed, uncharacteristically angry.
"Sorry! I forgot that I had it on." Youngjae flinched when Daehyun snatched the ring back. This proceeded in a strange lecture about how Daehyun can never be without his ring, which ended in Youngjae shouting "well if you care about that stupid ring more than me-" and kicking his half dressed boyfriend out of his dorm.
Later, Daehyun had called him. "The reason I can't take that ring off," he said seriously over the phone, "is because that ring is magical. It protects me. Without it, I'll turn into an animal."
That was when Youngjae promptly hung up. Youngjae's freeze lasted three more days until Daehyun invited him over for dinner with the promise of explaining things.
Here, sitting in a grand oak dinning room with a dozen of Daehyun's family members, Youngjae feels like absolutely nothing has been explained. The only thing he notices is that every one of Daehyun's relatives --from Jongup to Junhong to Yongguk to his attractive sisters-- wears the same ring on their index fingers.
"So," Himchan says after an excruciatingly large meal, stopping Youngjae from kicking Daehyun under the table. "You've been dating my idiot cousin for a while. Naturally, I didn't think it would last because Daehyun is as sensitive as a potato, but he seems to trust you enough."
Apparently not enough to tell him the truth, Youngjae thinks. What he says instead is, "I guess so."
"Have you heard of the Chinese Zodiac?" Junhong asks, leaning over his side of the dinning room table.
Youngjae thinks. "Yes, of course. It relates each year to an animal and its reputed attributes, according to a 12-year mathematical cycle. I'm a dog."
"And I'm a rooster," Daehyun says.
Youngjae looks at him. He met Daehyun in music theory class. They're in the same school year, but technically Daehyun was born in 93. "Yeah," he says. "I know."
"No," Daehyun says. "I'm actually a rooster."
"Our ancestors have always been connected to the 12 zodiacs," Himchan explains. "If anyone in our family is touched by a member of the opposite sex, they turn into their respective zodiac animal. The rings we wear have a seal that prevents the transformation."
Youngjae looks at Daehyun, frowning deeply.
"Hyung's being serious," Daehyun says, squeezing Youngjae's hand. "I knew you wouldn't believe me. That's why I brought you here for a demonstration."
Youngjae pauses for a moment. "If this is an elaborate joke-"
"Oh, this is my favorite part," Junhong says wickedly.
"I'll hug him," Himchan's girlfriend offers. Hyosung stands up from her seat and walks to their end of the table, leaning on the back of Daehyun's chair. Her gaze is predatory.
Daehyun removes his ring and reaches for Youngjae, putting it into Youngjae's hand. "Just remember how attractive I am as a human," Daehyun says meekly.
Youngjae opens his mouth to protest, but stops when Hyosung hugs Daehyun and a cloud of smoke sends Youngjae into a coughing fit. When the tears clear out of his eyes, Youngjae looks down to find Daehyun's clothes in a messy pile on his chair.
Hyosung lifts the shirt to reveal a small, beige chick hopping around. It has a large beak and wild eyes.
"Oh, I don't know," Jieun says dreamily. "Daehyun-ah is pretty cute as a rooster too."
Youngjae cradles the chick in his hands and brings it up to eye level. "Daehyunnie?" He looks at everyone in the room. Yongguk seems amused while Sunhwa is recording a video on her phone. "Okay guys, this is some weird hobo magic. Where did Daehyun go?"
"He's in your hand," Jongup explains patiently. "Try doing something."
Youngjae squints at the chick. "Nod twice if you understand me." He yelps when the chick digs its beak into Youngjae's hand. Twice.
Hyosung grins. "Kiss your boyfriend if you want him to transform back."
Youngjae considers this. He looks from everyone's expectant faces to the china shelf to the chandelier hanging on the ceiling. Daehyun is going to die if this is an elaborate prank. Reluctantly, Youngjae brings the chick to his mouth and kisses it.
Youngjae is expecting the poof of smoke this time, but nothing can really prepare him for a lapful of Daehyun that follows the transformation. Especially a butt naked one.
"I thought you wouldn't believe me!" Daehyun says, arms wrapped around Youngjae's back. "I thought I would be stuck as a rooster until one of my relatives took pity and kissed me!" He blinks when Hyosung dumps the shirt in his lap.
"Did you get that on video?" Hana asks, to which Sunhwa just grins.
"This means you're stuck with us forever," Junhong comments idly, already digging into his dessert.
Youngjae looks at Daehyun's expression, bright and fantastic. Daehyun's arms are firm as they travel around Youngjae's waist. There's a goofy smile on Daehyun's face as if being kissed by Youngjae is the best thing to have happened to him.
Youngjae laughs. Being stuck with Daehyun wouldn't be so bad.
