Are you a con-person?

In the light of all the Lumos squee on my flist, and all the polls asking which cons people are going to attend next year, I am curious to see how many people on my flist actually like conventions ( Read more... )

I think we all squee over cons for precisely the reason you said - we don't get to talk about this in RL much. Any opportunity to talk about fandomy things with people who Get It is not to be missed.

Not responding to the poll because, hey, I've been to one con ever (earlier this year) and I don't know the answer yet.

I gathered it wasn't a 'normal' con: the focus was SF/Fantasy/allsorts, but on learning how to do it/having it demonstrated how to do it. I found that fascinating.

I plan to go to both Sectus and Prophecy, and will be interested to see how I react. I'm going to every panel I find of interest; socialising, though wonderful, really will have to fit in between. Not everybody's attitude, I already know.

Just popped over to your journal after your deleted comment about hhhouseparty (does that mean you changed your minds and don't want to come after all?), and couldn't resist replying...

mean, most people don't go abroad to spend days with like minded people. There aren't all that many golf conventions, photography conventions, poetry conventions etc.

For me, the fundamental difference is that golf, photography and poetry gatherings are more easily accessible - there are usually groups of like-minded people in most cities, so people don't have to go abroad to meet others with the same interest. Take a rarer interest like Tango or Harp and you'll find that people do indeed travel internationally to meet others - it might be more socially acceptable than fandom, but the pool of devotees is small enough that to develop one's interest one has to look further afield ( ... )

Hi!

Am just about to run out the door so I don't have time to reply to your fandom con post, even though they really interest me.

But I wanted to tell you that we can't come to the houseparty, alas. I had a slight brain-fart, and only realised after I posted the comment that my mother will be visiting me that weekend *blushes* Sorry about the confusion, I should have emailed you.

I hope you lot have a great time up there and me and the hubby will be with you in spirit!
